    Hello,

I searched the forum but could not find the answer to my specific question. Sorry if this is common knowledge or a dumb question.

My brother is in France and has procured some solid beers that he wants to bring back to the states. What would his best option be?

    A. Put bottles into suitcase and check the bag?
    B. Package a box and check with luggage on his flight?
    C. Try to mail the box to the US?

    Thanks for any help!

    Jon

    Hi,
As long as you don't surpass the weight allowance he can pack the beers in clothes tightly into a suitcase and check the bag. I've done so several times and every it worked just fine. Important is to make sure there's no room to shift around in the suitcase.
Usually one item of luggage is allowed up to 50 lbs. An extra item will cost you extra. It differs per airline.

Shipping boxes to the US is not cheap from Europe, at least not from the Netherlands. And you pay by weight, so shipping bottles of beer is going to be expensive. And then there is the risk of US Customs seizing it because it's not legal to ship alcohol to the US.

I would take them with me on the plane (suitcase or separate box doesn't make a difference). And for how much beer to bring legally into the US, just ask it in one of the US-forums  But sending it via Mail is very expensive and illegal in the US.

Thanks for the info! I have packed many a beer into my suitcases for trips between cities in the US! Just wasn't sure how that plays out with customs when you land.

Much cheaper to pack the beer in your suitcase. I've done it tons of times to numerous countries without dramas.

And you just fill out the customs card with the general $$ amount of the beer in the suitcase when landing?

Yeah, that's all. I've never lied on the customs forms and I've only been pulled over once and got away with more than the allowance. Can't speak for US customs but in most countries I've visited the limit has always been one litre. As long as you haven't got a suitcase full they won't really care about a litre or two over the limit. The worst that can happen is that they confiscate the bottles or make you pay a small tax fee. Although, once again I can't speak for American customs.
