Sometimes it's fairly obvious. Ex a store I used to go to that rubbed the dates off all of the lagunitas sucks quarts in the fridge.

Recently poured a 2010 DFH WWS and went to take pic of date after pouring to post on WBAYDN. My finger accidentally touched the date on the neck as I picked up bottle and poof it's gone like a dry erase marker

Was this by any chance on the mixed six rack that you spotted these bottles?

I've been in stores where it was pretty obvious from the bottle labels (e.g., Christmas beers available in May and a few other clues) where the mixed six shelf of singles seemed to consist mostly of relatively old beers compared to the rest of the store's stock. It would be a lot less work rubbing a date off a bottle if done while moving the bottles from a pack holder to the singles shelf.

In all but one case, yes. Only once did I encounter this on beers in a 4/6 pack holder. I included that note at the end of the paragraph below since I agree with your reasoning.

Didn't recall that specific comment but wanted to confirm a suspicion. Thanks.

So I'd say both of us have been seeing something that is probably happening at the retailer level of activity and is a deliberate strategy to not have to return the beer (which they may not be able to do either because of state law in some states or because they no longer have a full case) or to have to destroy the beer and eat the associated costs.

Just one more reason to be extra careful in stores that offer both pack holders and singles.

I have experienced this numerous times in a bigger chain store's singles section, the older bottles with ink print were very clearly rubbed off. I went to their six pack section and located the same beer and the ink was fine (and of course the dates there were much newer).
