this is officially my 22nd Marzen of the season; I love them. After a "make your own 6er" of Marzens, I came to this one. I slow poured into my Chimay challis and got mad; it looked like Coors light. 2 seconds later, bam; the whole beer was caramel colored!! Amazing!! I'm wondering if I got a bad bottle or something as well as it has decent reviews and I thought it was a sub average Marzen. Anyone else see anything like this?

i don't like "make your own 6er" because the only stores near me that offer it use older beer. almost all of the single 12oz bottles in their fridge are old; just saw some IPAs brewed in march, etc. (not that i'm a stickler but their 6 packs are much more fresh) i enjoy Paulaner lager and oktoberfest but maybe you just didn't like them. i suggest Paulaner on draft, it's fantastic

Weird indeed. Not sure what happened there. I have always enjoyed this beer

Haven't seen or heard of it before. Mine have always poured a light copper. It should look like this though.

I've lived in those make your 6ers for great craft beer the last 3 years but I'm guessing Wiffler is correct today; just had the Hofbräu Oktoberfest and it got a 1.29; two German Marzens in a row can't be that bad.

How many of those 24 Marzens have you had today, Topher? Beers don't just change color with a "bam."

I had the Thomas Creek Marzen before hand which was above average but had to much carbonation for me.

Sometimes when a beer is cold and poured into a chalice (or whatever glassware is available) the Chill Haze gives off the illusion of the beer being paler in the visual. When the beer warms the haze is gone the beer will get darker.

I've seen it a couple of times in my beer ventures. Temperature and Sanitation of the Glassware can play a role. As far as your opinion on the Beer, if you're not impressed, you're not impressed. Try another one and keep it moving. After having a few more down the road, revisit this one again. You might it enjoy it at that moment in time.

    You have no clue.

There are both pale and copper colored Oktoberfests- and the pale version is the true modern version served at the fest. If you dock points for not being copper you truly don't understand the style.

Hofbrau is the best of any version we get here. Paulaner ships both types- the earlier one you had was most likely the Wies'n style. You are letting false expectations color your reactions to these beers (no pun intended).

Wikipedia says Marzens are to be Amber; you say not. Every one I've seen until tonight was so I'm not believing you.

Festbier can be copper or pale. The more munich and vienna malt, the darker the beer. Some festbier is primarily pilsner.

I guess you're responding to me, but it would help if you quoted me.

Here's the thing- Americans in general are way behind the times as far as Oktoberfest beers are concerned- the brewers, consumers, whomever writes and edits that Wikipedia page, even the Beer Advocate page is incorrect: this
    hasn't been true in decades.

It's one thing to try to start a discussion on these boards because you are unsure of something; it's quite another to make a hasty rash judgement based on a single sample that you don't seem to understand and encapsulate it in a review.

If my post seemed harsh and out of left field, it's because I am trying to get you to see something you aren't seeing yet.

I'd be interested in know exactly what Wikipedia page he's referencing as Wikipedia isn't always consistent with itself (it should be but the reality falls short). For instance Wikipedia also has this to say:

    Link: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pale_lager#Oktoberfestbier_.2F_M.C3.A4rzen

Which is consistent with what you are saying and certainly isn't a bold declaration that Oktoberfests are to be amber.
