Marris Otter for 2 Row

    Brewing today and I forgot to grab an extra pound of 2 row, recipe calls for 6# I got 5. I have a pound of Marris Otter around does anyone think I could use it instead? It's a Belgian Wit.

    Go ahead and use it. It will be a bit different, but likely better than omitting a whole pound of base malt.

    Not a problem...most Wits contain Pilsner malt anyway (not reg 2 row)

    I'm getting ready to brew a Wit with Belgian Pale Ale malt (similar to MO) and and a little more malted wheat than normal.

    If you want to get technical, Maris Otter IS 2-row malt. 2-row refers to the biology of the barley (kernels are arranged in two rows on the head of the plant). You'll have no problem making this switch.

    Yes, almost all brewing barley is now 2 Row. 6 Row was popular for high adjunct beers, but almost hard to find now. Marris Otter (MO) is a particular variety of 2 row grown mostly in the UK, but is kilned to a slightly higher Lovibond #. Compared to Pilsner malt (also 2 row) the MO is quite a bit breadier/toastier and will result in a different beer. Technically, Black patent is 2 row also but obviously a much different animal ...but 1# of MO in this beer may not even be noticeable : )

    You'll probably end up with a slightly more malty/bready wit. Who knows, you may end up liking it more than the original grain bill. If it were me I would have no problem trying it.

    Like others have said MO is 2 row. UK pale in my opinion is better than US pale, win win. Go for it!
