I think that the Belgian beers taste better from the 750ml format versus the 330ml bottles. This was especially true with Abbey Des Rocs Grand Cru. The 330 ml bottle was a muddled mess, but the same thing in a 750ml bottle was a phenomenal beer.

I prefer the big ins. I find myself enjoying a 750ml bottle, with a friend or solo, in particular the last couple Thanksgiving & Easter meals were much better w/a big Belgian bottle.

I enjoy 375's, especially for lambic, so that I don't get an ulcer while drinking a whole 750. That being said, I have heard that the beer itself cellars better in larger quantities, but have heard of no scientific evidence to support this claim.

Belgian styles use a lot more yeast for bottle conditioning which is why they're carbonated at a higher level than almost any other beer out there, bigger bottles = more yeast. Not a Belgian style, but an example is Double Simcoe from Weyerbacher, they've bottled the beer in two different formats - 12 oz bottles and 750 ml cork and cage, same beer, although similar, two very different animals with the larger bottle giving a creamier and more rounded flavor.

Haven't seen it in a number of years----the bigger bottles just had a better flavor and body.

I can't recollect ever wanting to drink less than 750ml - of anything - at a time. Since saisons are one of the very few beers my wife wants to drink with me, what I'd really like is availability in a five-gallon bucket format.

Good to hear the unfiltered version in the 750 was a bit different. Never did get to try one of those.

I always disliked that Orval and Rochefort aren't aviable in 750ml bottles. I always buy LaChouffe in 750ml bottles, way better in my opinion.
    It def. makes a difference.
750ml bottles are,for me, also the way to go for all french biere de gardes, although most of them are also widely aviable in cans and smaller bottles. Somehow it is not only a question of taste, but of style as well. And no,also I usually share them, 750ml of strong ales usually is not to much for me alone (and what speaks aiganst closing them aigan and finishing them of the next day?)

I was really surprised how different they were.

Rochefort makes my favorite abbey ales, so I've never noticed any problems with their beers in those smaller bottles. Of course, we also can't compare a 330 ml Rochefort 6 with a 750 ml Rochefort 6, so for all I know, Rochefort would be triple amazing out of larger bottles.

The last Chimay I drank was a blue out of the smaller bottle, and it was the best Chimay experience I've had.

In all of these cases, I did not age the beer at all.

Funny, never saw it on store shelves in belgium......
Maybe it only gets exported this way?
Westmalle and Chimay beers in big bottles are aviable at every supermarket in belgium I've ever been in, but Rochefort?

Rochefort's 75cl and 150cl are not available in supermarkerts, only beershops/stores. Rochefort releases these bottles every year in December, mostly a few days before Christmas.

I can confirm that the taste of the 75cl and 150cl is different than those from 33cl bottles.

Indeed, Chimay goes up to 6liter bottles.
