Hello all. I want to start by saying I know there's a recipe area but I haven't seen a recipe for a simple amber ale. Any suggestions?
A good place to start for any unfamiliar style is Brewing Classic Styles. All of the recipes in this book are solid.
Even Brewing Classic Styles offers up two different recipes since Amber Ale covers such a wide array of beers. Are you looking for a hoppy amber, a malty amber, low ABV, high ABV? All grain? Extract?
Thanks for the responses. I'm throwing a party/pig roast and just got into kegging. So, I decided to brew a 5g batch for the party. However, many of those coming are not necessarily hoppy, strong, heavy IPA or stout people. I was thinking of brewing an amber that is relatively balanced between malty and hoppy. Something around the 5% range too.
Shooting from the hip here, but something like this could be a crowd please: Assuming 75% mash efficiency 5# US 2 Row 4# German Munich 9 SRM .75# Caramunich III 56-60 SRM 2 oz Chocolate Malt 350 SRM Mash 155* for 60 Minutes Balanced chlorides and sulfates, moderately hard 60 minute boil Bitter to 20 IBU with your choice of hop @ 60 1 oz Hersbrucker @ 15 WLP013 London Ale yeast 5.25 Gal into fermentor 13.4 SRM ~25 IBU 1.050 OG 1.012 FG 5-5.1% ABV If you want it a little sweeter, you could add a few oz of honey malt, or bump up the caramunich. If you want a little more hop character, an oz of cascade or centennial at flame out would probably be nice.
Irish Reds are always a crowd pleaser. I use the BCS recipe and it always comes out brown. Very drinkable beer anyway.
