I guess I can't say for sure that there's any funny business going on here, but this seems a little suspicious to me. If you look at the reviews for Mockery's beer Schizophrenic Narcoleptic, 8/12 of the reviews are from brand new users who seemingly signed up on BA, gave this beer a rave review, and haven't participated on BA (or in many cases even revisited the site) since.

Alright, so I'm in Colorado. And I like Mockery a lot! And I think this was a pretty good beer (I reviewed it back on August 21st shortly after it came out). But some of the comments made in the "suspicious" reviews? I mean, come on. I won't quote them here, but you can read them and I think you'll agree.

I know people have every right to review a beer however they choose. Maybe these are people who have only drank amber ales and light beers and this blew their mind. But it just seems strange that there are SO many brand new users all reviewing this (and only this) beer in a short period of time. Am I just being a curmudgeon?

I bought a few bottles from the brewery after trying it, and maybe if I had the "new money" mentality, I'd be excited to see all of these 5.0 and 4.9 reviews because the hype train is rolling into the station!! Trade value is skyrocketing!! But I hate that crap. It reminds me of the stories that arose with Fundamental Observation. The bartenders/employees of the brewery were telling patrons to rate the beer well and not to accept anything less than <insert waelz here> for the beer when trading it. That's not to say that Mockery has anything to do with this, but I can't stand intentional over-hyping.

What do you all think? Am I overthinking it or reading into it too much? Is this an all-too-common practice that is inevitable that I just need to get over?

Wouldn't totally shock me, but that's unusual for this area. Sometimes I wonder if people don't sign up to do the opposite :stuck_out_tongue:
There's a lot of this kind of thing going on now. Seems every major new beer is somehow the world's best these days. It's becoming kind of funny.

That said, I do really like that beer. I don't rate anything anymore, but it's probably in 4+ territory if that's your thing.

Dear Colorado: Welcome to the site!

We see this user behavior every day; usually after certain brewery releases or bottle shares. On top of this, breweries will often encourage their patrons to drop the beer a review on BA, and we encourage brewers to do this. It's harmless and actually full of positives; we get more content, our users get more content, and the breweries get more exposure.

We're not talking about a lot of ratings (a whopping 13 12 as of this post :grimacing:), three of which are by reputable BAs, and we have new measures in place (on top of preexisting ones) to thwart abuse.

But if you suspect abuse ... you can report a review if it's blatant abuse or message us on the side with further proof; please have proof otherwise you're wasting our time. From what I can see, there's no connection between the users other than reviewing the same beer.

So yeah, you're probably overthinking it.

"I drank seven of these last night and wanted seven more."

I remember when I could drink. Those were the good old days before the days turned old.

Great example of a nonconstructive review that should've been reported vs. discussed. It's now removed.

You're assuming abuse, but they just released it in cans and apparently it's that good and take a closer look at who's reviewing.

Only harmless for those who don't put any validity in BA ratings.

This assumes that the reviews are harmful. Got proof? Report it.

Agreed. I'm assuming. It's just odd that there are a string of 5/5's, all perfect scores, all in a row. I've been wrong a million times before though.

And now there's one less review as one of their employees reviewed their own beer, which is illegal under FTC guidelines and noted on the site (not many people know this). Shit. I'm doing all the work here. Use the Report link, people!

True, although one is pre-packaged for trading and one isn't. Homerism is dying in favor of trade inflation.

It's interesting seeing this happening and actually mattering due to the new system minimums. Maybe the new weighted average will help stop every new release from being "Best Beer In The World!!! (this week)"

Well ... I mean you can find examples of this with many beers (nonconstructive or inside reviews), however, I do think people are overthinking it as it's not like this beer was going to jump into the top 250 given recent updates.
