White Birch Brewing - Berliner Weisse

    ------------------

Poured from the can into a wheat ale glass. No obvious can dating.

Faint one finger off white head, a bit of snapping carbonation about of the glass, and dissolves quickly to nothing and disappears. Body color is a muddy orange and brown, a solid lemon held to the light with a little bit of rising carbonation. Looks a little dead.

Aroma is fairly grainy smelling. Not much sense of tartness or lacto present. There's an almost woody splintery quality to this as well, like sawdust shavings. There's a touch of fruit maybe peach like quality on this but it's just not coming through. Nothing horrible though.

Palate seems to make up for it just a little. Tart mild lemon flavors hit the palate a bit nicely, but with a bit of a really wet body and very flat, even for a berliner and also surprisingly for one that is 5.5 % No really chewy malt backbone and more watery finish. Particularly sweet finish of peach and lemon as well after some time.

It's drinkable, but it's just not getting the quality of a good berliner, there's so much better out there. Third beer I've had from this brewery and they just can't seem to get it right.

    look: 3 | smell: 3 | taste: 3.25 | feel: 3 | overall: 3 | BA generated score : 3.1

I do have a new beer but will be saving it.
Unfortunately due to the somber nature of the weekend I'm going to hold off. I know I can't give it my all so as not to half ass it I'll wait. TY for being my "second family" and I'll be checking in occasionally.
Bottoms up BAs and enjoy your Sunday Evening!

    New NFL Season Sunday

Spent the first half of the Lions game on the treadmill, trying to earn the new beers I am about to put down. Starting with something light and refreshing:

    Best before 18.Sept.15

Just squeaking by on the freshness date. A little skunky on the nose to start, but that faded quickly to reveal a light honey aroma with a touch of grassy hops. The taste is still coming across as fresh to me. The light honey sweetness is there, with some crackery dryness to the malt to compliment it. The finish has a little bite and some more dryness from the hops. Overall this is a good German pilsener. Easy drinking, and it hits the spot. It was gone by the time I finished this review. 3.83/5

If the Lions keep slipping on this lead, the next new beer might be coming sooner than expected.

    Cheers, BA!

Don't see too many positive reviews of Crime or Punishment. I think I still have my bottle of Crime left; tried Punishment last year and couldn't have more than two sips because of the heat, but it was good to cook with.

Like I said, I like it. If I see Punishment, I'll pick that up too . I like spicy/hot, definitely in foods, not too bad in brews as well.

    Cheers!

Next beer 4 Hands Passion Fruit Prussia.

    4.09/5 rDev +6%
    look: 4 | smell: 4.25 | taste: 4 | feel: 4.25 | overall: 4

12 oz can, best before 11/20/15, poured into a pint glass

A- A hazy gold with a small white head.

S- Fairly sour, some wheat, some passion fruit, lemons, slight hints of raspberry jam.

T- Lacto, wheat, hint of lemons, passion fruit, sourness is on that lighter side, but definitely there. The passion fruit seems to be adding a nice element that doesn't overwhelm the beer, but bring it together.

    M- Smooth, crisp, light body.

O- A nice, easy drinking, low alcohol sour. Nicely done, might pick up a few more can next time I see it. Based on what this taste like feel like the fruit help this a lot, probably won't try the regular version.

Beautiful looking stuff in here as always ...

Here in the Brazos Valley, we got honest to goodness football weather for the first time all year last night. I came home after the late shift and got to open up the windows finally (first time in four months). Like riding a bike, Midnight the Cat hopped back on ledge detail to soak in the sub-70s night air :

On to the beer, a Texas-brewed farmhouse ale from Jester King, Provenance (Orange & Grapefruit):

Maybe a 2-4 on the SRM scale, @utopiajane?

    3.95 (+19.7%)

Provenance (Orange & Grapefruit) is pretty hardcore farmhouse stuff. It has the signature Jester King aroma, a pretty funky musty barn smell with a very outdoorsy aura. Growing up around rice dryers, it's starting to remind me of that sour/sweet smell of wet seed rice and burlap sacks.

That part is wonderful. The flavor starts off way too dirt bitter, like eating dirt bitter, and it takes the beer a little warming up and your palate to adjust before you start picking up on some citrus notes. Even then, there is nothing sweet about this beer. Even after 30-plus minutes of warming up in the glass, the closest thing you get to a sweet note is unsweetened grapefruit and orange peel. :astonished:

It's a fantastic beer in so many ways. That Jester King smell is turning into a personal favorite, and the mostly clear yellow brilliance and sticky/lacing head are fantastic. Personally, I'd like just a hint of some barley malt sweetness or something, a little orange fruit flavor, but at the same time, I love the fact that JK didn't try to overdo the sweeter aspects of the orange and grapefruit. I like the Lemon & Lime version of Provenance much, much better, but for a JK farmhouse ale, this orange and grapefruit version ain't bad.

Hope your Sundays are going well!
    Cheers!

    Greetings fellow NBSers,

It's been a while, but glad to be back here with a beer nicely suited today's cooler weather. From Atlanta, meet Orpheus The 12th Labor barrel-aged Russian Imperial Stout. In line with Orpheus' Belgian influence, the use of a Belgian yeast and addition of candi sugar distinguishes this beer.

Served in my favorite DFH "Perfect Glass," the beer pours a pitch black with a moderate-sized, dark tan head that settles to a trace color. Aroma of sweet malts, coconut, chocolate, and some noticeable alcohol. Sweetness all the way. Despite a long time in bourbon barrels, the expected oak and vanilla are restrained, if noticeable. Taste is sweet, with a balance of chocolate and licorice notes. Oaky bourbon notes are much more noticeable here and counterbalance a very sweet stout. While a bit boozy, it's still quite drinkable for 13% ABV. Mouthfeel is oily and with slight carbonation befitting such a huge beer. All in all, an excellent beer.

While a certain other beer from Athens stole the spotlight this week, this beer serves as a clear reminder that greatness abounds all over Georgi An awesome effort from @jpellett251 and Orpheus. Easily a 4.75 beer for me. Cheers!

Spaten Marzen has long been a favorite of mine, but the green bottle really does the beer no favors. I found that the covered 12-pack does a decent job of keeping it from becoming lightstruck, and it is far preferable to the six-pack version. But it wasn't until I tried it on draft that I realized just how good it was.

Interestingly, determining the SRM is actually a bit complicated! It depends also upon the depth of your sample (and the source of your light, to which I think you were alluding!).

    Here's a great chart
    [IMG]
from a great post on the topic that includes a great summary of the concept:
Anyway, the point of all that was that it may explain the deviation from 16 to 25 you mentioned.

    New Imperial IPA?

It's an awesome time in West MI. Temps dipped into the early fall range and skies are blue.

After the first week back to school, we grilled on Friday, I coached up some youth soccer for the boys and hosted friends on Saturday, got in a decent run in the crisp air this morning, ruined the workout with an awesome doughnut, mowed the lawn, and started on this tasty brew.

750 ml bottle (I believe it was $8-9 from Costco), poured into a Duvel tulip. Beyond 2015 on the label, there is no visible dating.

A- A normal pour results in a 1-1/2 finger khaki head. Clean, Amber body with moderate carbonation. The head drops to a nice, foamy film and there's fantastic lacing left on the glass.

S- Lots of fresh, juicy hops at first. Quite sweet. Grapefruit juice, pineapple, melon. Then I get some nice, spicy notes along with tobacco and a little leather. It's all imperial IPA at this point.

T- Lots of hops, but an abundant malt backbone. There are spicy and leafy hops up front, and a good, grainy malt presence through the middle. The finish is on the hoppy side, almost minty. It's like a big barleywine in the taste department from my vantage point.

M- Full body. Hoppy bite. Medium carbonation.

O- imperial red IPA, seems to translate to barleywine. And a pretty good one at that. The way it's marketed, I imagine it's meant to be consumed fresh. I think it would probably do well with some age on it as well. Pricing point was decent. I'd pick it up again to share with a friend.
