Each year the boys in the family converge on a different city for a weekend of baseball. This year it's Philly. I'll be at the Downtown Marriott 8-9 to 8/13 for the STL series & sightseeing. A few of us are history buffs so that's a must as is, of course, beer.
What's in store? I'm not too familiar with East Coast stuff other than the usual suspects - DFH, Victory which are phenominal so what should I be looking for to bring home? Any nearby beer stores, bars, restaurants you would recommend? Any strange provincial alcohol laws I need to be aware of?
    Thanks,

Take a ride to tired hands in Ardmore, not too far away. They got some good things going on. If your looking for any IP trades, hit me up.

Pennsylvania has more provincial liquor laws than you can shake a stick out. The Center City Marriott is near a lot of great bars. I'd recommend Nodding Head on Sansom St near 15th and Tria on 18th as two of my favorites. Philadelphia has great distribution so you can expect to see beers from coast-to-coast here in Philly.

Victory has a beer hall at the Xfinity Live complex across the street from the ballpark. It's a little bit amateur hour down there pre-game but I enjoy putting back a liter of Prima Pils before the game.

Also, Citizens Bank Park has an amazing selection of beers for a ballpark. Check out the Brewerytown stand behind Section 102 for Prism Shady Blonde which is brewed with blood oranges and is delicious. If you're there on Friday night, you might bump into me.

    Enjoy your trip.

for combo history / beer / food make sure you hit up the City Tavern in old city.

old bar/restaurant dating back to the 1770s. good food, trying to recreate some traditional philadelphia colonial dishes, and sampler flights of the Revolutionary Ales series by Yards Brewing in Philly.
kinda touristy, but hey... you're tourists.

also have to recommend Standard Tap in Northern Liberties section of the city for anyone from out of town that would like to try local beers. All the beers they have (20-ish taps? i think? and always a couple on handpump) are from local breweries - nothing outside of probably 100 miles or so away. And the food is good, too.

Let me/us know where you decide to go on Saturday (if that will be one of the days you're out and about). I'll be in the area on Saturday as well, so maybe we can get together for a beer. Cheers!

The hotel will be real close to Nodding Head Brewpub, Mcgillans, and Fergies; I love all 3. And Monk's Cafe is close enough that you have to go there. No, really, I insist, you MUST go there  Just do it before dinner.

    "Just do it before dinner"

Agreed (if you really want to go). And in this case, before dinner means before 5:00... maybe even before 4:00.

I was there last weekend and the place was packed at 3:00pm. Pliny and Blind Pig on tap and loved the atmosphere. So the hype is well deserved IMO.

This is exactly why I never go on Friday or Saturday (the crowds, not the beer selection). On the other hand, the times I've gone on Sunday (afternoon), it's actually been pretty quiet.
