Just had a crazy idea, and I’m trying to flesh it out. Figured this would be a good group to run it by before moving forward…

Football season is upon us, and one of my favorite times of the year is my fantasy football drafts. All the anticipation of a season, unlimited potential (before the inevitable disappointment of the actual season), and that unbelievable feeling when you get when you snag a sleeper right before your rival is able to draft them. Anyways, I was thinking – how can I apply this to a BIF… Let me know what you think – this is open for discussion and suggestions:

Anyone who wanted to participate would have to pony up “X” number of beers. I’d say let’s go with 3 but we can expand this based on interest.
    • 1 of the beers must be a local favorite – something with distribution that doesn’t span past your state’s borders, but still something that you can pick up on a somewhat regular basis at the brewery or your local bottle shop.
    • 1 of the beers must be a limited release – think KBS, Parabola or a local brew of similar rarity. Something that is released once a year and generally sells out within a day or two of hitting the shelves, and if you miss out, you’re SOL.
    • The third beer must be something special. I’m not going to specify that it must be a whale since that’s asking too much of people, but this beer should be good enough to be the headliner if it were to be included in a monster box. Cellared stouts with a few years on them, 1-off releases, or (if you must) a certified whale.
Those beers are your buy in – you’d send me a BM of the 3 beers you’re offering and I’d compile a master list for everyone to review. All participants would get a chance to study up, scout out what they like, and pick a few sleeper bottles that they think might last into the final round. I would then throw everyone’s names into a random number generator and create a draft order. Then we would “draft” these beers as you would a normal fantasy league, and when it’s done the owners of each bottle would ship to their new owner. Chances are you’d be sending 3 boxes to 3 different Locals so shipping logistics and costs might be a sticking point for some, but it doesn’t seem like that’s stopped any of you before.

If this seems like something people would be interested in doing, let me know. And if you’ve got any ideas to make this better, please speak up!

    Dislike button.

Mind if I ask why you wouldn't be interested? Like I said, it's still in the idea phase so adjustments could be made.

I love this idea, sounds like a ton of fun. The shipping of individual boxes could be a little costly, but I'd probably still do it. Sending you a BM to discuss more.

Fair enough. That's my only concern too, but I'm hoping the fact that boxes will be only 1-bottle each (pending addition of "extras") should keep the prices low enough.

I really like this idea a lot. I'd be in. Could clean it up some making it 4 beers (2 local favorites) and keep them in pairs so you're only sending 2 boxes.

I've seen things *like* this in the past. The biggest PITA is the discrepancy (and butthurt) in what people are ponying up vs what they perceive they are getting. I think it actually has a chance of working in this group considering we are all on a mad dash to lose every possible trade. On a semi-related note...did everyone see the horizontalhood signups?

Shipping multiple boxes like that, especially with single bottles, would make it pretty tough. One of two changes I think would make it make more sense:

Change each "bottle" to a 6-shipper; you'd still draft a single item, but what gets sent is a 6-shipper (we'd all do it anyway, just make it official, and specific so no one gets out of hand). At that point you're basically doing 3 (small) BIFs in one. This is still unweildy, and might be a challenge to find a time when people can sign up for three decent size boxes at once, but I think it'd be at least more "worth it" than 3 boxes with a single bottle (on up, depending on your proximity to Florida)

The other idea is to do this at a bottle share, where there's no shipping involved. At the Locals Share 1.0 we did a pretty traditional 'Secret Santa' which was a ton of fun, and this would be a pretty cool spin on the concept.

I am a few boxes behind as well, four by my count but have been waiting to grab some special beer to include in at least three of four boxes but it sounds interesting and I might be down for it.

Technically, I owe one more LIF box, then I'm all caught up.

I am trying to keep my beer hobby down to a dull roar to offset the new car payment. Also, the mod bug is hitting me pretty hard, if we have any other gearheads in here.

    Colts Season Long LIF....

According to ESPN at this moment in time, the Colts are favored by 7.5 so that line is now set for the purposes of this week's LIF. That means that if the Colts lose or if the Colts win by 7 or less points then some lucky person will be getting the 2nd box of this LIF. If the Colts win by 8 or more points then no box will be sent out. Time will tell if the Colts have gotten their heads out of their asstwats or not.

As of right now, the following people are signed up for Week 2. You have until kickoff of the game to either opt into the week or opt out of the week.
    Week 2 – dwmetsfan13, Valrxman

Just for tracking purposes here is the complete list of weekly signups as they exist right now:

Four bottles is also better because assuming a snake draft everybody's average draft pick would be the same. With three bottles the first pick is much more valuable.
