Except for Ballast Point's Sculpin, I find all of their other offerings as average to underwhelming. What other breweries tend to follow this script? One great beer, and other's that don't come close. Yes... I've tried Grapefruit Sculpin and I was not impressed with the artificial flavor and mouthfeel.

I think dinner from Maine brewing is a top 5 beer ever! That being said I don't think anything else from them blows me away. Lunch and Mo are solid but nowhere near dinner.

Ballast Point is hardly a "one hit wonder" brewery. Looking across their review scores, there's quite a consensus on that.

Matter of taste and an atypical person's palate perhaps.

I love Big Eye, Victory at Sea, Dorado, Habanero Sculpin, and more.

I've had Habenero Sculpin, Big Eye, Dorado, Calm Before The Storm.... All average at best. Good beers, but average. Also over priced. I paid $13.99 for a sixer of Grunion, and after one bottle, gave the rest away to my brother-in-law who said he had a hard time drinking it. Can't understand why I love Sculpin so much. This beer is a benchmark for IPA's.

I agree 100% with this, Victory at Sea is a top notch brew. The one beer I don't really like from them is Grunion.

Also, with regards to MBC...Another One is phenomenal, I have found most of their beers to be above average. They keep it simple and know what they do well.

Easy... Wachusett Larry. I love that beer. Everything else from them is the very definition of "meh."

I recently visited Kuhnhenn and expected big things based on the BB4D and BBBW and was significantly underwhelmed with the rest of their menu (went through 3 flights to taste as much as possible). Not sure it classifies as a one-hit wonder exactly but was hoping for more from the rest of the menu

Have you tried Victory at Sea? Maybe something different like Indra Kunindra? Fathom? These are all great beers. I love grunion and I don't mind paying for a 6-pack.

Disagree with both BP and Maine - but horses for courses and all that

Honestly can't think of any brewery that only makes one stellar beer (other than saying something like Orval, but I'm assuming that's not the point of the thread)

I will have to seek out Victory at Sea. Maybe it will become a favorite, since I love the style. It's hard to locate here in NY.

For me, Left Hand fits this bill.

Their Milk Stout, arguably, sets the standard for the style, IMO. The rest of their catalog I find to be at best decent but forgettable (i.e. Chainsaw Ale, Blackjack Porter, Sawtooth) to at worst flat out horrible (i.e. 400 Pound Monkey).

Have you tried Victory at Sea? I like that one much more than Sculpin.

I think Ballast Point is a good brewery overall, but I don't fall into the large hype surrounding Sculpin and the brewery as a whole either.

Well that's like, your opionion, man. I really enjoy Left Hand. I really like 400 lb monkey too (and looking at the ratings, I am not the only one). But in addition that that, Fade to Black Vol. 1 is great. Look at their beer reviews here or Rate Beer. They have a ton of good brews. I think I've tried 15-17 diff. brews from Left Hand. Also the "Wake Up Dead Nitro" is pretty solid as well, although there are a lot of good imperial stouts out there.

I honestly have to agree about Ballast Point. I had Big Eye and Dorado first and wasn't a big fan of either of them. Then I had Longfin and felt the same way.

I reluctantly had Sculpin with my roommate, which turned out to be exemplary (though, not necessarily worth the $14 a 6-pack that its reputation seems to net). Grapefruit and Habranero were also good, but just variations.

I still hold out hope for the brewery, but beyond Sculpin+variations, I have yet to have anything that has blown me away. I will be checking out Victory at Sea, though.

I just had the "pale ale" kolsch and thought it was really good.

I would argue that DRIPA is their great (and more regularly available) beer...which helps them fit in with the subject of this thread. I did try that BBBW at the MI Winter Beer fest and it was amazing, but not exactly easy to get otherwise.

I second this. Larry is a great beer. The rest of their lineup...nothing special.

I agree with most of the responses here, Victory at Sea is insanely good. I had one a couple weeks ago (from last year's batch) and it was super chocolatey and smooth. Awesome stuff.

Edit: I have nothing to contribute to the one-hit wonder aspect of this thread and for that, I apologize.

Thanks for reminding me of that one - I did enjoy that too and had it at a few other locations around Detroit while I was in town.
