From afar I've heard good things about some of the recent Urban Family beers. I always felt like they had potential, that they were really trying to do something unique and needed in the Seattle area, but that the execution fell just shy of where it needed to be. But seems like with these recent Fancy Sauce releases things are moving in a positive direction. The upcoming berliner and saison releases look intriguing as well.

Any thoughts? Is this just positive evolution or has something changed - grown into the new location, new brewer, other?

I like Urban Family and the beers they're making, not sure why they don't get more love. I will say that their MO of shipping most of their beer to Texas is kinda strange.

There is a new brewer if I remember right, but he hasn't been there very long. I think a lot of their sours and other funky bottles were done before he got here. I could be wrong, though. I'm also guessing that no longer having to deal with Shelton has allowed them more time to make beer.

The new brewer is from Tired Hands.

That's it. Didn't he start in July or August?

Steve started in May, I believe. The Fancy Sauce Peche was killer.

Hmmm - tired hands is one of my favorite spots. Sounds like I need to hunt these releases down.

You folks are really doing a poor job with local brewery PR. ;-)

It's easier for me to get awesome beer from the pnw than Chicago ... Even though I'm in Chicago. No one hear could make a saison to save their lives.

I never see their beer on tap anywhere and parking over there is a pain in the ass. Otherwise I'd try more stuff. Haven't been to the new location, hopefully parking isn't as much of a chore.

I have never parked more than 10-15 steps from Urban Family - I like the remoteness of the Magnolia / Fishermens Terminal location. It's definitely off the grid.

Funny you should say that. I dig them. No one here thinks they're worth a damn. They actually plan on opening a tasting room soon and they started a "sour / wild beer" club. They're promising for sure. 18th Street down in Gary and Transient, now building out in Michigan, are also solid on the saison / sour front. But if you brew a 9% honey IPA you're going to get 15,000% more interest than if you brew a saison.

That's cause most of it is shipped to Texas. I can't figure out why.

    New business plan:

    1. Get some honey
    2. Make some IPA
    3. ???
    4. Profit

I've heard stories from people about why, but I'll refrain from spreading rumors online.

I'm drinking my first Urban Family beer tonight: Flowers Are Sleeping, a brett saison with elderflower and honeysuckle. It's quite good. The floral components really come through in the finish.
