I'll fess up to having "made my own" once. It was at a kroger, they normally have goose island beers available and they didn't have what I wanted (actually was slim pickings after 4 beers. So I "fixed it" by grabbing 2 others. Now they weren't more expensive beers by any means, but looking back it was likely wrong even if they normally offer those beers.

Though grabbing a 10+ 4 pack beer seems a hair worse to me at least.

Then don't buy it/shop elsewhere. Simple.

As everyone else has said, in my eyes using the entire store as your mix-a-six section is scummy.

BUT I will take advantage when bottles from a $10 4-pack end up in the legitimate singles section. I should have posted it on the 'latest hauls' thread: I once walked out of a grocery store with two sixers, one of Old Rasputin and one of Allagash White, for $17.98+tax. Morty Seinfeld would be so proud.

I don't really consider the prices of most bombers because like 95% of craft drinkers, I realize they're a ripoff

My local wegmans will put the last 4pk or 6pk or two of a seasonal beer into their mix six area. Some recent examples include dark penance and double trouble, and some past examples included SMS, rubeus, best brown, and dogfish seasonals. I've spoken to the woman who manages the beer section, and she told me it just makes sense for her to use that area to clean up on the last remnants of seasonal stuff, even if she's selling it at cost or less in some instances. I would never presume to put beer that isn't in the variety six area in a mix six, but I will take advantage whenever I see something that shouldn't be there in it.

Note: Wegmans stickers their bottles in the mix six section, so I'm not sure it would be feasible to try to rip them off because they check every bottle.

All the places I have purchased mixed packs from all scan each bottle and more expensive bottles ring at a high price. If the bottle is not part of the mixed pack program it will ring up at the full pack price. This seems to prevent the problem.

A new place I just started going to sells everything as singles which is a nice way to try new beers that are actually fresh. The beers are also sold at the regular price, no upcharge for a single, which is also nice. On the downside, the shelves are a mess.

My two favorite stores have extensive mix a six sections. Virtually everything they have is replicated in multipack and singles format. The singles are individually priced, but you get I think ten percent off at the register. I imagine this has to be a boatload of work between breaking up packs, stickering, and entering all those bottles into the system. I certainly appreciate that effort!

Breaking up a multipack, while not necessary wher I shop, would be a shaky move.

I went to Dewey Beach, Delaware for vacation this summer and stopped at Dogfish Head. At the brewery a 10oz serving was $5.75, so I had many!

But when we came back I went to Westover Market in Arlington looking for beer and they had just received a shipment. I took a six-pack to the register and asked how much it was. The person told me $15 ... for one bottle, needless to say I put it back. So I went over to Total Wine in McLean, they had a bottle for $12.

Best to go directly to the brewery on day trips and enjoy the beer and the ocean! (and don't forget the 4 free samples, one of which was, you guessed it)

Not that I do this, but if you're going to swipe one, at least put the rest in with the other singles for someone else or at least for the staff who may mark it accordingly.

My store has great single bottles, sculpin, cape good hope, chimay, rochefort, a lot of founders stuff. But a single bottle is anywhere from 1.50 to $4

That's presuming the store has the individual sku already in the system. Most will not until they, or someone decides to break it apart, or they have to sell it as a single and have it force entered in.

At my store, we don't offer a mix and match 6 pack because we already have enough problems with people making their own 4 and 6 packs. Usually it will be a 4 or 6 pack that's super marked down, and people will throw a 4 or 5 dollar bottle of something in there and call it a day.

All the stores in my area limit you to two of the same beer. That way theoreticaly, beers are left for someone else. It's like locking your house, car, tool box. It only keeps the honest guy out.

The first part of that statement is complete truth and I/We thank you.

The second part comes from a guy who lives in the same state as the KBS where here Just asking if we have a bottle costs
5$..... That was a joke but a 12$ KBS is standard here upstate and 15$ is standard in NYC... if you can even find some.

The 2 professional brewers and a handful of home brewers I've spoke with over the years for the most part feel the price is kinda extreme. Not sure if I specified but I was referring to 12 ounce bottles, not bombers

In many places mix-a-six works without a hitch, but this is exactly why the retailer I worked at had only offered a mix-a-six section briefly, during the height of the 1990s Micro Boom.

As every school teacher will tell you: Some folks will naturally want to color outside the lines.
