last few places I have been to that let you make your own 6 packs have all encouraged the customer to get your bottles from any pack you want.

Aww but dude...by taking all 4 that first week you didn't leave any other of the local DIPA singles for other beer lovers! For shame... (kidding!)

OK I was in a Local Total Wine the other day and a lady in the beer isle I was in was asking a store employee if the had a certain beer in the singles isle for the mix a 6 pack. The employee took a look and said "No, but go over to the other isle and take one from one of the 6 packs there. That way I will get more singles to stock over here for the mix six and singles isle! I thought that was really cool, so today I stopped in and was looking for a certain beer in a single and was told the same exact thing by another clerk. Hey if they are cool with it then why the hell not? Just check to be sure so you do not become a douche like some here are accusing folks who break 6ers without asking first!

Whether you or whomever you have spoken to about the price isn't why he thought it was funny, it was because you contradicted yourself. You said that the cost is based on the alcohol content, not ingredients. How do you think DFH reaches such a high ABV on 120?

I've never taken a beer from a non-eligible six pack without asking the store owner. Some places will let you do it so long as you ask, and other places won't.

I've seen people doing what has been described in this status multiple times, But I don't feel it is my place to get involved since it is likely the beer would have just ended up in the singles section anyway since one of the main places I'm referring to doesn't exactly move craft very quickly

You can obtain that high abv by using only water, sugar, and turbo yeast. Not saying that is the process used in making 120 but the main taste I take away from 120 is alcohol. It's overbearing

All the mix six's I see in my area are priced per bottle.
Anyone who put's beers that don't belong in their six is just a douche bag.

The Mixed Sixes at my store are $10.99, and it's a set section that people can choose from. I can put anything into that section as long as the price of a single bottle doesn't go over 10.99/6-pack, so I rotate selections fairly regularly. I get somewhere between irked and exasperated whenever I find a bottle missing from something that's not in that section; irked if it is priced such that I can put the remainder into the Mix wall, and up to exasperated when I find a bottle (or 4 ) missing from a $24 4-pack like Thirsty Dog Wulver. To try and alleviate that, I let my customers know to come talk to me if there's something not on the wall that they'd like to mix, and as long as the price is right, I can accommodate them.

I've brought up just adding single bottle upcs to the higher ups, but unfortunately that sort of thing is a huge undertaking for a chain our size.

There's a local store that charges way too much for its beers and mix-a-six. Unfortunately it's the only store nearby. Do I grab some limiteds, yes. But only at this store where you pay to play.

Those are still ingredients and you're oversimplifying the process and time it takes to make a beer that big. That's fine that you don't like the beer and you don't think it's worth the price. I'm not a huge fan either but by saying that it costs $10 a bottle due to the ABV and has nothing to do with the ingredients is just incorrect.

You miss out on a LOT of great beer doing that but I agree they're over priced. If Dogifish put 120 in a bomber, you have more than even a heavy drinker might want AND the price would be insanity.

Ok, OK, my conscious is catching up to me. After reading this thread for 2 days, I now will admit that I have done this once. I grabbed 2 DFH Burton Batons and put them in my mix-a-six. Sorry !!!

To atone, you must now brew 2 Burton Batons and sneak them into the store's mix section.

Not at the Wegman's I visit in NY. They are just regular bottles. I always found that weird.

In regard to this issue, I have never broken up a pack, and to go the other way, if I find a beer that I want in "broken" pack, I usually find the section manager and ask if I can then take from that pack to add to my mix six. About 3/4 of the time the manager is happy I asked, and has no problem with it, sometimes they are under direction just to remove the broken 4/6 and I cannot get the beer. It's kind of sad, I always seem to find at least 4 or 5 broken packs. Bad karma.

My local grocery chain does Mix-a-Six and I use it from time to time. The only thing I do is exchange the room temperature bottles on the MaS rack with cold ones in the cooler so I can go home and start crushing (aka ticking).

I have contemplated building a few Mix Packs with stuff not on the rack, but haven't done it. I would imagine they would just take the remaining 3-5 bottles from the pack I cheated with and put them in the Mix-a-Six rack. Most times they would make more money provided all the loose ones eventually sell. Mixed Pack is $10 and most craft sixers are $7.99-10.99. I could possibly help them make more money :grinning:

Wouldn't it be a hell of a lot easier for them to just tag the bottles and cans that ARE included in the "mix a six" promotion? :astonished:

Someone who does that probably also ran with scissors in kindergarten (after taking the scissors from a classmate without asking!). Stores have rules and customers must follow those rules if they wish to shop there...

There are two Wegmans that I go to and one puts a colored mark on top of their singles and the other does not - always wondered why (maybe fewer scissors-runners in one area??). The bottle shop near my home has a much wider selection of singles and unlike Wegmans does not require you to always make a six-pack.

It seems that grocery stores tend to be more controlling of what can be purchased as singles...
