yeah but if you are going for an anniversary trip you probably wanna go somewhere and throw down some cash for a nice meal with great ambiance! also, while the prado isnt somewhere i would go myself, its in the middle of balboa park and i think the food is just fine! for a visitor its a really unique restaurant

Boston. The city itself has more than a few breweries that aren't Sam Adams and Harpoon that will wet your whistle. You should definitely hit up Cambridge Brewing Company if you go there. Also, the Sam Adams tour is pretty cool and worth doing just to say you did it. On the food side, the North End, there.

What he said and, of course, the Trillium.

Um, hello? New Hampshire? Less than an hour's drive north? Smuttynose, Stone Face, Garrison City, etc.

Does anybody recall what it was like in Boston last winter? Is there a better reason to pick S.D. if you're planning a winter trip? And oh yeah, it gets hot in Boston in the summer.

Since you'll be on the cape, take a ferry to Martha's Vineyard (Woods Hole to Oak Bluffs) and go get a pizza and drink your face off at Offshore Ale Company. (Not peanut allergy friendly) Then, when you're done with that, go to Back Door Donuts and eat donuts.

If you don't do this, I'll be very disappointed in you.

I've been to Boston and it's a great city but living on the East coast makes me scream San Diego! I've never been west of Las Vegas, yet.

Great weather, amazing breweries, and many cities nearby to visit as well. San Diego would be my choice. although going to Fenway for a game was really cool, such a great place.

    Boston born and raised:

Yes, I remember. Delivering booze 9-5 in 6ft of snow. That was mostly from Jan-April but it still sucked.

If you plan on coming to Boston:

Go to: Jack's Abby, Trillium, Mystic, Night Shift, Aeronaut, CBC, Berkshire, Downeast

    For my rant:

    1. Boston is a great weekend stop if you plan on driving around New England and boozing, because most of the breweries you'll want to go to are nowhere near the city - many out of state. Also, there is a fuck-ton of traffic at all times because there is never-ending construction everywhere

    2. Take an official duck tour.

    3. Drivers are scary, rude, and dangerous.

    4. Winter/Spring is filled with daddy's disposable income rich college kids. Summer is filled with goofy international tourists who think it's OK to mock your accent to your face like you're a monkey at a zoo, and think that Boston Lager is the best beer they can get in the city. However, you get the cool tourists that come here, like the BA's who want to check out what our breweries have to offer!

    5. Everything is extremely expensive and pretty overrated. Bars close at 2, Trains stop at 1. Go figure. Go to breweries and bring your own food. Ask locals for hole-in-the-wall restaurants. THOSE are the ones you want.

    6. If you pay more than $20 for a lobster roll, you are getting ripped off.

    7. Please don't ask anyone to say "that phrase."

    8. The summer is disgusting and muggy.

    9. Come to the Extreme Beer Fest and visit me at the Anderson Valley Booth.

Boston is amazing in the fall. I speak as a Midwesterner who has lived here a decade. An October trip might be perfect (plus, if it's the end of October, you can go up to Fiddlehead where they'll be putting out a release of Mastermind... mmmmmmm).

No, you can't drink at all of the breweries, but what you can do is get Trillium and Night Shift and Tree House beers. Then get some fresh seafood. Then enjoy food and drink of awesome.

Having recently celebrated my 10 year anniversary myself...go where she wants to go! I guarantee you will have a blast in either City. Both have plenty of great beer to enjoy. So, history and foliage or sun and beaches?

Probably won't find a good lobstah roll and good beer at the same spot. Get your lobster roll (the large one) at Lobster Hut in Plymouth.

Here's the question my inner NYer keeps wondering: why all of this focus on 'breweries'? Especially if it's inconvenient to get around to visit them. Why not hit up the best beer bars, which will have fresh draught taps of local faves, and will be more readily available via public transportation? Is there something like that, a sort of pub crawl, that you can recommend to the OP?

ETA: in NYC I'd definitely steer people to a pub crawl rather than visiting breweries. Especially if they were 'foodies'.

    Nice! Thanks.

Fwiw- I wasn't really commenting your post per se, it was more of a general comment on the thread that used your post as a jumping off point.
