I dont understand: distaste for hops

    Simple..some people just don't like hoppy beer..period..same as anything else in life,it's all about taste..some people like Chinese food or Mexican food..some don't..some people like Opera or Country music..some don't...No big deal.

    There's what, probably North of 50,000 different beers brewed in the US alone right now? I don't think hop experimentation is causing you ANY problems finding beer you enjoy and authentic styles. I laughed at the new hoppy 'quad' that Victory is coming out with. Regardless of what I think of it, there are DOZENS of actual Belgian quads sitting on shelves across the US. I'll just continue to grab those...

    Very true. Even for the guys that are known for IPAs. Take Hill Farmstead for example. While of course they are known for the VT IPA, they are also known just as well for their amazing saisons, not to mention their flagship Everett porter which just might be the best porter on the planet. Same goes for Tree House with their stouts.

    Good! I like bitter IPAs, and I like bitter pils too:wink: Of course, there's no mention of the comparative starting point in case sales of each style. I suspect IPA is in the penthouse and pils in the 2nd floor storage closet, but I don't have any data to back that up:slight_smile:

    I have been drinking a lot of Hill Farmstead Mary lately; that beer is a German Pilsner.

    So overall, I don't think it's that the people you are describing dislike hops, it's that they dislike a good chunk of the community that has arisen as a result of the 2010/2011 craft expansion that is so enamored with hops bombs and bourbon barrel aging that it feels, rightly or wrongly, that there's little room for beers like browns/pilsners/bocks/non-BA stouts in the craft community right now.

    This, all day long. I happen to be quite a fan of G.I. IPA. It's got flavor AND subtlety - wait, what!? :grimacing:

    Why don't I like grapefruit? Or beets. My wife is one of the 10% of the population that to them, cilantro tastes like soap. It is a gene thing. Different people ave different tastes, news flash. Choice is a good thing. Look at a bread aisle. Or a cereal one. How many people don't drink coffee. Or manhattans. Gasp. Don't like cask strength bourbon, leave my house, now. Start them on a nice cask British ipa, ease them into it, might work.

    Big and Bold and Brash will always be more popular than refined, elegant, mild.

    Distaste for hops?? I can see distaste for bitter as that is something we are genetically coded for some people are more sensitive than others to those compounds on the receptors of the tongue.
    While its mostly genetics you can train your brain to break this pattern of bitter food and drink and actually find enjoyment from them.

    Hops≠IBU≠Bitterness.

    The key is find something or things you enjoy and do so on your own terms. Just follow the "Don't Be A Dick" rule.

    While that is certainly true for the majority of BA folks the reality is that for the majority of beer drinkers the opposite is true; Bud Light is the number 1 selling beer in the US.

    And Carling Lager is the number 1 selling beer in the UK, Jupiler is the number 1 selling beer in Belgium, ...

    Not in all cases. For some portion of the population, that's like telling a red-green colorblind person they can teach themselves to see red.

    When I can't even detect that there is pepper in Habanero Sculpin around the reaction my tongue has to hops, and I've been drinking craft beer and trying to acclimate to hops for a decade...I'm willing to bet I'm not just a lone mutant in the sea of humanity.

    Very true. See my previous post where Boulevard 80 Acre at 20 IBU is undrinkable for me, but Ten FIDY at 98 IBU is quite possibly the highest rating I've given to a stout. I should probably start digging into the chemistry of beer, to see if I can figure out what precisely it is about hops that sets me off, and what is present in some beers with massive hop bills that mitigates that effect.

    I don't understand all the love for hops. And why do so many breweries make so many APA/IPA/DIPA/Red IPAs etc. And then they over-hop beers that shouldn't be hop forward.

    Mediocrity in brewing skills can be masked by dry hopping the shit out of the wort, and I think that's why some beer lovers go with different styles that can't hide imperfections. Just my .02

    I love traditional German and Czech style pilsners and would be a little more excited about their increasing availability if not for the trend already beginning to show itself. Some breweries seem to think the only way to compete in the pilsner market is to overhop them with American varieties that don't belong in them. Just make a solid world class example and it will sell just fine. If the extreme hopheads don't like them, they can always go back to their ipa's
