Who the hell knows what 3 people Untappd this "Golden Ale". Could be some people who haven't the slightest clue what they're drinking. I've plenty of faith whatever is released will be quite tasty. He seems to have this barrel/cave program on lock at this point.

I do not remember a limit on the 2009 Golden Ale. I definitely bought several bottles over the course of a few months.

Bottom line is golden ale should have been a thumbprint. Especially since it was already released once...... $$$$$$ is why it's not a thumbprint. I agree it will probably be a shelf turd in their depot for weeks. Even longer than Wild Bitter lasted probably

Yea pretty disapointing to end the year with Golden. I dont know if that is worth a special trip up there as I dont imagine it will fly off shelfs.

You must work at NG to make such a definitive statement.

The actual bottom line is that the R&D series is Dan's baby, and he decides what goes where. He doesn't owe you or anyone else anything, certainly not a hype-train fruited wild for every single release. He's put in enough work and given us enough of his awesome beers that he has earned the right to make whatever he wants and put it out under any label he wants (though this shouldn't imply that he didn't always have that right; it's his brewery after all). You don't have to buy anything you don't want to, which always seems to get lost on consumers.

It seems like every single anticipated release from any brewery really brings the entitlement out.

Golden Ale's last release was a nice take on an Orval-style beer. Sure, it's not hyped, and it will definitely sit, but I can't believe anyone would be upset about it being easier to get; guess it screws the tradebait culture a little.

Personally, I'm tiring of everything having to be a fruited wild or a fruited Berliner or an overhopped IIPA or a barrel-aged whatever. I think we all need to branch out a little.

Oh hey! I see that the New Glarus R&D release has become the new Founders Backstage Release outlet for complainers on BA.

Yup, prepare for the inevitable "Golden Ale isn't as good this time around" comments as well. I liked this thread better when people were excited about New Glarus releases. This complaining and entitlement stuff has got to go.

Also, I don't understand the Wild Bitter hate. That beer knocked my socks off. I even traded away my last Backyard Rye for for some more of that sweet nectar.

More like a satellite outlet than a replacement given the Redankulous thread.

Speaking as someone who was planning to get up to NG for the release but probably can't now, if it sits at the depot for a week or two, that would be just fine with me. I tend to trust Dan and his stuff (outside of Winter Warmer, which I irrationally hate), so I'm sure this'll be a damn tasty beer.

I'm looking forward to trying the Golden Ale. I really liked Wild Bitter and will be seeking more of those out too.

I wish the R&D would've been a Grodziskie or a Lichtenhainer or a Kolsch. That would've had me rolling.

I always love to see someone ripped apart for having a certain opinion on a product, on a site where we talk about that product.

I hope you learned your lesson, @vizzionman. You do not question Dan Fucking Carey. Anything but marble-gargling is entitlement.

Haha no lesson learned. If I have something to say I say it. Like I care what a few beer nerds have to say in return? Keep it going! I'm excited for the beer to try it. The 4 r&d releases per year now is just a bit overkill between the cost, the driving, when half of them were thumbprint quality beers if that. The lack of thumbprints this year and the 4 r&d just shows importance of money for the brewery. Obviously every business is in business to make money but its just a bit annoying the direction they turned this year. What happened to one killer release where you can tell a lot of time and care was put in the beer and had awesome reception? Sour Fruit, Wild Peach etc? These meh r & d beers are annoying. Great if some people think bitter was a homerun. The ratings and reception of majority prove otherwise.

I get what you're saying, but I didn't say that Dan is infallible. He's not. It's not for any of us to tell him what to brew or where in his lineup to put it, though, especially with regard to the R&D series. I'm not "marble-gargling" because I don't think that every beer he's ever made is amazing, and I, as much as anyone, want to see VSB again as an R&D (or better yet, a Thumbprint). I just hate that whenever something is released we're not just happy about the release, we have to complain about how it wasn't exactly what we wanted. No brewer (or chef, artist, etc.) can please everyone, so I think they should just try to please themselves and hope that someone else likes what they do.

But what do you really want...

Time and care into a beer? Well you got it with all the releases this year. A blend of 3 different year lambic style beers. A BB aged fruited Ale and an IIPA turned sour

Or...trade bait and hype. Wild Peach and VSB didn't have more time and care put into them.

I don't have any real opinion on the R&D beers, as I haven't had any of them, but I figure I'll point out 2 things:

    1) Wild Bitter's average is a 4.04, which is still very solid by most standards (maybe not worth driving all over the place for, but probably worth a taste, right?). Again, since I haven't had it, it's very possible that I'd think it tastes like crap. Either way, it seems like plenty of people were happy with it.

    2) I think most people would agree that New Glarus releases are among the more reasonably priced ones out there, especially for the quality. I think they could easily jack prices on their fruit beers up a few bucks, and few people would blink, and their 4 and 6 packs are all reasonably priced and solid beers. The brewery itself also is super reasonable in that it costs you very little there to get the beers they have on tap, and you get glassware with it. I think all in all they're pretty good about what they charge.

    3) I would imagine doing Scream IIPA all year round is part of the reason there have been less Thumbprints. Does that make me happy? Not really, but only because I have a lot of different IPAs/IIPAs to drink (being in Chicago), so I'd rather get variety from them. But I don't think they're slacking by any means.

Obviously you're totally entitled to your opinion; I just figured I'd give my two cents on NG's operation as well.

Besides, we could do with a little less hype for the R&D releases, in my opinion. Hype is screwing up every big beer we know and love!
