I don't think charging $10 for a special release is overkill. That's pretty much the base price for a shelf bomber of any style, let alone a special release that happens FOUR times a year. What a cash grab.
The ratings don't prove anything other than what the majority thinks. It doesn't mean that's a fact for everyone.

Agreed, and I didn't say he couldn't say it. It's really the tone that he knows better than Dan that makes it seem entitled. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't disappointed that this wasn't BB Kriek.

This will never, ever stop happening. How boring would it be if we all had the exact same opinion about every beer?

So someone doesn't like a beer/price/availability. That's ok. This site is here for us to discuss what we think. Maybe don't let someone else's opinion bother you.

I was really hoping that Dan C would get his retro on, and give us an R&D Zima.

Why does it matter what others think of a beer or what the majority thinks? Shouldn't it come down to what you think of the beer and how it is for you personally? I mean you are going to be the one drinking it.

Oh right. It's not about drinking the beer it's about trading it. How naive of me. Well then I do agree. This Golden Ale BS is really going to cramp my trading as well.

Yes. It is about drinking it too. But it's always good for the trip and time invested to pick up a good r&d beer and trade it for another good beer to try. I'm sure it will be "okay" not 10 dollars per bottle, limited release, 2 per person, and driving 3 hours roundtrip good. You see what I'm getting at? I guess I used to think r&d was about really limited once a year crafted delicious beer. Yes vintage and bbbb were great! I just don't think bitter and golden ale belong in r&d packaging. My two cents. Their operation though. Just my opinions. It's funny how all of us here share a strong thing in common, yet half the time someone makes a comment and then everyone has to pounce on the person and bicker and become enemies. That shouldn't be the case. Oh well.

Not trying to be a dick here: but if I thought the following

"But it's always good for the trip and time invested to pick up a good r&d beer and trade it for another good beer to try. I'm sure it will be "okay" not 10 dollars per bottle, limited release, 2 per person, and driving 3 hours roundtrip good"

Then I would, you know, not make the drive for this one.

I believe the thought behind this statement is the key to your argument, and something we might all agree on.

Much of all of our loyalty was built on NG's Thumbprint series. The yearly release of at least a couple new, affordable, and often exciting beers that we didn't have to go out of our way to chase made NG different than any other brewery in the country. By seemingly doing away with the Thumbprint series, and now requiring customers to drive to the brewery four times a year if they want to get the same types of beer that were previously delivered to our local shops, I really feel like NG is taking a step in the wrong direction.

In addition, I loved going to New Glarus once a year. Grabbing some pizza, hitting the bakery, going to Puempel's, it was an annual pilgrimage that both my wife and I truly looked forward to. Twice a year, still good. Three times, fine but starting to wear thin. Four times, the magic is pretty well gone. From what I can tell, many other folks feel this same way.

By stripping away the greatness that was the Thumbprint series, and simultaneously tarnishing the joy of visiting their beautiful brewery, I feel like two of the biggest factors that made NG special are now gone. On top of all that, the price increases from earlier this year have leveled out the playing field between NG and many other local breweries.

Dan is certainly welcome to do as he pleases, he truly owes me nothing. However, I hope this year is an anomaly, and things return to more of how they have been in the past. If they don't, I'm sure I'll find myself buying less NG beer and starting to try a wider variety of alternatives.

Why is everyone mad? Everyone hear loves beer. Golden ale is the most beer tasting beer there is (like a pils). Also just going to the New Glarus brewery and interacting with other beer lovers is super fun. Also that place is gorgeous. Sorry it's not a stout or sour, but you know it's still worth going and getting. Also if you were a brewmaster, you would want to do whatever you wanted regardless of the popular consensus. That is what Dan is doing. Relax. If you don't want it, don't get it. However, I bet you'd be missing out because the other 3 R+D's this year were unreal!

Well, on the bright side we won't have 30+ people asking (worrying) about how early they need to get to the brewery in order to secure their 2 bottles

My only problem with the R&D Golden Ale is that it's already been done. I thought R&D was just that...for R&D? I didn't really expect to see duplicates in this series. Clearly the golden ale has already been researched and developed, so for all intents and purposes, it should be a thumbprint...IMO, of course.

Yea, I hope it's more then two bottles as well. I have to drive quite a long ways to get there. I'd like to walk with more then 2 for a grand total of 5 hours of driving plus.

90% of people in this thread probably never even had the original golden ale, which was great and very orval-y. If you can't live without fruit, try a banana for breakfast
