I've been in Portland about 10 months and am still overwhelmed by the sheer volume of amazing beer. However, I've been missing Founder's Breakfast Stout lately and I'm wondering if there's anywhere I might find it around here.

No Founders out here in Cascadia.

It's a great beer, though not available out here. You can easily trade for it from someone in the Midwest.

Yeah that's what I figured. I think I saw Founders on tap at Culmination one time, but that was likely a one-off. I guess my next question would be, what's an option that similar and available? Base Camp's S'Mores Stout is good, but doesn't have that same amazing chocolatey, coffee goodness.

Ninkasi recently released a milk stout brewed with coffee called Noir. I haven't tried it yet, but that may fit the bill.

Laurelwood's Portland Roast Espresso Stout is my favorite local "breakfast style" stout. It's not year-round, but it should be available soon. Terminal Gravity brews & bottles a breakfast porter. I haven't had it in a while, but IIRC, it's not very close to FBS. Barley Brown's makes a breakfast stout, but again, it's been a while since I've had it, so I can't really comment on similarities to FBS. Probably worth a try, at least.

I would recommend Barley brown's breakfast stout. Not the easiest to find on tap but Growler Guys have it on draft right now. Fathead's also has their bean me up imperial stout which was pretty tasty when I had it.

I found Alameda's porter to actually be pretty similar in terms of flavor profile. Caldera's isn't bad either.

It is plentiful here in Notheast. If you can get me a growler of Notorious, would be more than happy to send some your way.

I have had FBS, and it is good. I just had some Barley Brown's Breakfast Stout today's at GG and I was blown away. It was a great beer, it matches and dare I say surpasses on the coffee aspect. Not the same for chocolate, but I think I actually preferred the BB today. I guess I need to have more to be sure. For science.

my favorite substitute is ft george's breakfast stout, but to my knowledge, they don't distribute it.

FBS is damn good and i love the format.

You will get zero arguments on the format. 12 oz four-packs?? Yes please.

I've yet to find anything out here really comparable to FBS, but if I really feel the need for a good coffee stout, Speedway always does the trick for me (easy to find in bottles, and generally not all that difficult to find on tap).

Moving up the area soonish; what's with the lack of quality local imperial stouts/porters up there?

Definitely not a lack of those styles in NW IMHO. I think the difference is many of the top beers aren't available in the handy 12 oz format that so many big name midwestern beers are sold in.

Agreed. Was going to mention it as well, but wasn't really sure it qualifies as a coffee stout alternative (as it's listed as a Baltic porter blended with Madagascar vanilla beans, but with some coffee in there as well). Unfortunately, at least at this point, it doesn't seem to be all that easy to come by.
