Just food for thought here and maybe I can get some opinions. It's seems to me that everyone wants the same 10 beers all the time, mainly based on hype and not actually ever having them and formulating an opinion of their own. I'm guilty of some things also. A score on BA will determine if I "want" a beer. Posting in forums or other trading groups, people just threadshit rather than be productive and helpful. They would rather belittle your collection and dick swing than just not say anything at all. I feel like there are so many egotistical traders out there that it's mind blowing. Like think about what your actually bragging about. You one way or the other got a bottle of delicious bubbly poison water, you didn't save a child or beat cancer. Maybe I'm wrong but it just seems like everyday it gets worse. I posted an ISO for a beer yesterday with just my list and wanted to expand. It was for a shelf turd that I don't get. A $10 375 ml turd. The requests that people made were funny to me but also insulting. Like trying to one up me to better their collection. I always want a trade partner to walk away happy and like their box wasn't as good as mine because I like to share beer with people. Not try to charge $250 for some stout that is sold for a tenth of the price. I just venting here but some opinions would be nice. Cheers!
I dont trade, but ive noticed, for example, i talk pumpkin beers a lot around this time of year, a lot arent so good honestly but i have my favorites and try them all and when i bring it up, i am then insulted, because of my choice of styles. It kept me from using this site for a while. I dont let it bother me its just funny that whenever i post, there's usually a derogatory comment towards me from some person who came out of the wood work or something, ive not seen post ever before but to insult me, all because i like pumpkin haha. Also picked up a 40oz of Old E then moved on to the local section and somebody actually said to me "go back over there to your cheap beer and leave the craft to us real beer guys" it made me laugh quite hard. I just thinks its a select group that lost touch about what beer can/should be, which to me is bring people together and make friends. Cheers.
I've also had a lot of great experiences with super generous people that blow me away with generosity and knowledge and a willingness to help me learn things I hadn't before. It's not everyone, that was just my title to the post. I just can't comprehend some peoples logic. I agree URK1127 that people have gotten away from the whole social bonding and gravitated to almost an upper middle lower class system of segregation and that just bugs me. People can do what they want. I personally just wanted to vent.
After beer trading started, the entire world went mad. It was hard to tell who was more crazy, me, or everyone else.
Agree with @Urk1127 there is a strand of snobbery that runs through craft drinkers. I would not say that snobbery dominates but the craft scene has promulgated this image. Personally I've never experienced this in trading and I've had traders who were extremely generous with extras and others who have sent me beer just because I've never tried the style or a beer that is unavailable in my area.
I traded a little when I joined this site. Seemed like an expensive way to get beers that weren't that much better than beers I could get at local bottle shops. Although it was fun trying some of the more hyped beers of that time (Heady, Pliny, Westy, BCBS Vanilla and Coffee). I think chasing the hyped brews is a phase for some of us, it certainly was for me. I'm glad it only lasted a few months on my end, ha. I haven't traded in years at this point, but I see people talk about the culture of the trading forums and it's sad, scary and sadly predictable. Out of curiosity, what beer was it that you wanted?
An Almanac Heirloom Pumpkin. I trade on here a decent amount and more on other groups and most people feel the same as I do and love to be generous with their haul. It's just a niche market of these people who make me insane.
Sure, a lot of it from us all being in different beer time and space. You see people asking newbie type questions and getting the verbal beatdown by people who asked those same questions themselves 4 months ago. Kids hoarding and dick waving over rarez, sourz, whalez, et al. Imperialing everything, barreling everything, not enough hops, dismissing the awesome because it's been ticked already, no concept a good clean lager... Where did my beer scene go?
I just recently got into trading. Just out of curiosity, what were you looking for? If I've got it, or can get it, we can easily work something out. I don't put a very high value on beer generally.
I appreciate your help. I've had several people offer to ship theirs I'd I just provide the label or work it into a trade. I have had an overwhelming amount of good come from this site. I'm just perplexed at some of the outrageous things some people do or say. You can message me a FT list if you're interested and if we have something that the other wants I would be more than willing to try and set something up. Cheers!
I think the key is trying to be specific as possible with your post before you can complain about insulting offers. Honestly, replying to these kind of FT:ISO post are a waste of time, it seems like your looking for the best offer. A simple i'm looking for 3-4 Heirloom pick 1-2 from the list might have helped.
I can definitely respect that. Just was looking more so for this to not be what the trade was based on. This was more like an extra but you're completely right.
