I'm confident that I'm one of the cheapest ************s here, so shopping for beers when they are on sale is as big a factor as type, brand, mood, etc.
Last night I was at Binny's, shopping for family coming into town this weekend, and they had Two Hearted 4-pk tallboys at $7.99 and Bell's Best Brown at $6.99. Pretty good deals, I thought, and quality, reliable stuff.
Here's the question: haven't opened them yet, but if a beer is on sale how often can you assume it's fading in freshness, and how often does that really matter? Guess I'll find out tonight.

side note: on the contrary, after methodically canvassing the entire beer selection, there's a lot of REALLY overpriced beer out there, jesus; as such proudly picked up a 30-pk of Hamms cans for $12.99

I wouldn't worry. Best brown is just coming into season and the 2hearted is canned. It's been my experience that a typical 'special' or 'on sale' item is no more likely to be out of code than anything else - but I'd be cautious of anything with an ESPECIALLY low price. Then they might be trying to blow-out an item.

Best Brown was on sale at my local spot too. It should be super fresh as it just released. With the Two Hearted, check the date on the bottom of the can. And cheers, those are two damn fine beers.

I believe one of those Jean Luc Picard memes where he is flabbergasted is in order here.

I'l do my best without linking.

"You just bought it on sale!!! On sale!!"

Beyond that, Bells does date their stuff and it's actually really easy to find and figure out.

I wish that my store would have sales on beers as good as those. Usually my store will have ones on sale that they're way overstocked on. I guess they ordered too many of them, and they didn't sell as well as they thought. I think there was a lot of Pumking (or Warlock, can't remember) that was on sale a little while back. I usually pass up on sale items since they're usually not the best beers, and I always have other specific things in mind.

both of those beers have clearly marked born on dates when in bottles....is that not true for cans?

Usually as soon as Bells and Founders comes out Meijer has them on sale. As soon as breakfast stout came out they had it for 9.99.

Love finding sale beer when I can. Like not normal sales, but big sales. Picked up a 4 pack of brookyn chocolate, it was marked down and then rung up even less. $6 a 4-pack, yes please. should have gotten more.

$7.99 for Two Hearted cans and $6.99 Best Brown cans are Binny's normal everyday prices. I love the beers and the prices. $12.99 for Hamms 30 pack is a lot of suds for the money, but you can beat that. Binny's also has 30 packs of High Life for a mere $11.99. I love Binny's!

    Enjoy your beer!

Over the summer, I found Aprihop for $2.99 a 4 pk. I only bought one because I knew it was out of season. Went back to get more ... gone :slight_frown:.
BTW, cans do not guarantee the hops will not fade.

If you're cheap, craft beer is the wrong hobby for you..

When I lived in NY, a sale on craft beer might as well have been called "Get your outdated beer marked down here". There was no such thing as a sale on fresh beer. Now that I've moved to CO, well things have changed. There are beer sales all over town [Denver] and it's mostly all fresh and local brews. And I've been to Binny's myself. Great stores.

Binnys has a pretty standard rotation of brewery-based sales; that is, typically they put on sale almost anything by one brewery with a few of them on sale per month. Standards are Two Brothers, Bell's, Great Lakes, Deschutes, Stone, Founders, Revolution (cans). Occasional others, but the point is that they may/may not be fresh, but are of the same brewer.

I'm cheap like you. That's how I know the above.

Case of Big Eddies Russian Imperial, Wee Heavy, Imperial IPA, and Rye Wine were 11.99 a case earlier this year at DEPS in northern Kentucky.
Brooklyn Dry Irish was also 11.99 a case this past spring.
Unfortunately all that is out there now is the pumpkin brews from Blue Moon....24 bottles of...ummm....yuck.

That is why I like the term frugal. It implies that you look for the deal and does not preclude expensive purchases.

Last month I bought a 4pk of Ommegang Fleur De Houblon on clearance for $5. I thought it would be horrible considering it was released at the beginning of the summer. I ended up going back and grabbing 4 more. I also do this sometimes with Winter beers from last season if I know they haven't been sitting out.

Beers on sale are obviously old stock, why drink old shitty stuff just because it's cheap. Just go AAL then at least it's fresh.

I bought Two-Hearted cans from Binny's 2 weeks ago that weren't even on sale. After opening and tasting awful, I checked the date on the can. They were from November 2014. Never buying Two-Hearted cans again since they put the canning date on the can but you can't see that for the cardboard 4pk cover.

" from the land of sky blue waters, comes the beer refreshing Hamm's..." Forget the beer, the jingle was great.

Eh....it's important to note that in some states (Illinois being one), quantity discounts are legal. For example, if the store buys one case of two hearted cans, it might be $35, but if the store buys fifteen cases, they might be $29 per case (in this four pack example, a dollar off per case). So, the store might just be getting a deal and passing it on to you to move all the beer they just bought, so they don't get stuck with a bunch of a beer.

I used to love their animated TV ads, with the Hamms bears.
