Same with outdated. I see these Sam Adams Dark Depths bombers get lower every day. Theyre at $3 a bomber now. And Tasman Red, Double Bock, all $3. But im scared haha because the layer of dust on them is incredible.

Green's stores blow out summer seasonals at the end of September. This year it's Festina Peche at $4.99 a four pack.

:astonished: I buy beer all the time that is "on sale" (i.e., priced temporarily lower than the standard shelf price for the same beer at the same retailer) and never buy "old stock".

Just within the past few weeks, that's included Sixpoint's mixed box, 12 packs of SN and SA Oktoberfests and 15's of Founders All Day IPA. All between under 1 month to around 2 months since packaging.

When I lived near Syracuse, there was one Mom and Pop Grocery store that would have a monthly Sierra Nevada 12pk sale. More often than not everything would be <6weeks old, and at $12.99 you can't pass that up, especially in NY

Not here, if it's in the mark down bin it's past it's best by date, no problem if it's a porter or stout but they never are. I'd love to find some current SN Fest beer marked down I'd buy all they had.

My favorite shops will often have a beer of the week, brewery of the month, or some such thing going on where there's a lower than normal price. When one shop started carrying Off Color, they had Apex Predator a couple bucks less than it is now as an introductory price... Had I known I would really dig that beer, more would have followed me home. Jacks Abby was a brewery of the month a while back...modest discount, but a buck is a buck and it was Jacks Abby...

I'm more careful with the bargain shelf where you can take a core sample of the dust to figure out how long a bottle has been sitting there, but there's great deals to be found every so often. I'll often buy Christmas beers for next year right after Christmas. St. Bernardus at a discount? Go ahead...twist my arm.

So I am not generally suspicious of sale prices, but I do pay attention. An advantage of not being addicted to hops, perhaps? There are plenty of beers that taste great more than fifteen minutes after bottling

I was downstate - Westchester & Putnam. The Target store in Mt. Kisco would sell SNPA 12 packs for $13.99. Only problem is that the allocation was either quite small or they got sold out pretty quickly.

I buy beer that is on sale often and it's never on sale because of freshness issues. Chain stores will often have beer on sale, it's just like any other product chain stores sell, don't enjoy worry, enjoy the prices and the beer.

Here in NY I can guarantee that any "Sale" on craft beer if it isn't occurring during an official sampling of said beer is 99.99999999% expired.

If it looks too good to be true....

The world of craft beer is so goddamn expensive, why would a self admitted cheap ************ ever step into this place. I understand the want for low prices; I'm sooooo poor because of this hobby/habit/addiction, but in here you will never find them. There is only one reason for a 30 brick of Hamm's, and it does not involve enjoyment.

If a beer has freshness dating, but they're closing it out, why not? I can't resist a bargain. I recently bought a case of Summit Summer Ale, a nice light, crisp easy drinker for $15.55. Best by date was October 19. I was also getting 12s of Sierra Summerfest for $8.99 recently. They were both great. Today I bought a couple of bottles of Bent Brewstillery's Funked Up Berried Gose for $5.99 each. I would obviously be a little more careful with an IPA. It's true that craft beer isn't a cheap hobby, but you can drink good beer on a budget if you're not fixated on whales.

The last time I grabbed beer on sale was this summer. I snagged two 6ers of Founders porter. One was fresh, the other was from 2014. They came from the same stack display. There was quite a big difference in the flavor, with the fresh being superior. By chance, I started with the old 6 pack. Took the first drink and new it was off, then I checked the dates. Lesson learned. Being a true Beer Advocate, I finished the old 6 pack for the team.

I'll grab stuff on sale being full aware that it is older (I'm talking not brand spanking new rather than out of date in 3 days or even past date). If I'm willing to do this depends on the style of the beer and the brewery. Nooner in cans? Yes, please. A RIS? Sure. Some local IPA in bottles. No.

As pointed out though there are other reasons for sales, one big one is holidays. At least around here it isn't uncommon for 12-packs to go on sale for things like Labor Day, the 4th of July, and the like. As far as there being a lot of overpriced beer I'm inclined to agree, but there is also a lot of moderately priced beer, and some beer with sales comes at a great price point (looking at you Sierra Nevada, New Belgium, and Sam Adams). Will it be the same price as Hamms? No, but that a burger at a sit down restaurant costs more than the McDonald's Dollar Menu doesn't make it overpriced. They may both be burgers but they are very much different products.

At my liquor store there are a couple reasons beer goes on sale. Here the wholesalers often cut us case deals, but we keep our standard margin so the savings are passed on to the customer. Or if the beer is nearing its "enjoy by" date or has been in the store for a couple months then we knock it down 10-20%. Once it has passed the enjoy by or been in the store 3+ months we just sell it at cost.
