Nice photos. So what did you think of the beer? Pick up any interesting aromas and flavors or was it a waste? Inquiring minds would like to know.

    Cheers!

Just picked up my first 4pk of these the other day. I can't lie, I have scruples with this brew. I think I may have one left in the 'ol beer fridge - I'll endeavor to crack it open sometime today & re-visit with a nod to your notes, my brother :-)

After what I can only describe as a completely offensive experience with that Ballast Point Habanero Sculpin, i felt that my poor, victimized tongue deserved a critically acclaimed Virginia classic in this Alewerks Bourbon Barrel Porter

As you can see, it's just gorgeous. That thick beige head wasn't forced too much, but it was eager to show off certainly. Lacing is sleek and decorative as the head slides down. Coloring is equally remarkable as it somehow makes dark seem matte and stunning.

Nose is of sweet bourbon to start but gives way to vanilla, fig and faint plum.

Magnificent taste. Molasses, vanilla, fudge, maybe a little eggnog and of course, bourbon. Bourbon is nowhere near overpowering as it compliments the rest of the flavors. Balance between all the flavors in fact, is just art.

Mouthfeel is immediately dry before a hint of carbonation teases the tongue. Aftertaste is sweet mostly and maybe just a little cloying.

Clearly this deserves every bit of praise it receives. Just a magnificent beer.

As I thought of it recently, I think this is my favorite VA beer. The Hardywood Bourbon Barleywine was damn good, as well, but this one has an additional "place in my heart" as I somewhat accidentally came across it while at the brewery last year.

    New Pumpkin Ale Sunday

Hello all! Chilly and cloudy here in the Milwaukee area. Today's brew was nothing special, in my opinion - from New Belgium - Pumpkick. I scored it a 3.45, only a slight hair lower than the current average. The only interesting part was the touch of cranberry that makes it unique. Otherwise (and even then) a somewhat bland beer. Oh well, it's decent enough to get through the 6-pack eventually (I've already had two of them). Kicking myself a bit because I bought a 6-pack then went to another store that had singles of it. Still, it's worth drinking and I shouldn't kick myself too much - it happens, and it could be worse!

Good day NBS. I am returning this week and have a few entries to knock out today (I'm trying to do some fridge cleaning, so I'll be back a few times)

First up today Oude Geuze Tilquin...with a best by date of Nov. 2024. Picked this up while searching for some Bell's 30th yesterday. I knew one little place around here might have it simply because it's the kind of place where you can walk in and find gems sitting on the shelf. This is the kind of place that will have Vanilla Rye on the shelf for standard price a month after Black Friday....anyway onto the review.

Pours a hazy orange/gold with a fluffy, bubbly chalk white head that dissipates fairly quickly. Seems to hint at high levels of carbonation.

Smell has a noticeable funk/skunk, some white pepper spice, and a nice light peach and apricot note from the yeast.

Taste has the funk upfront. Not tart exactly but a slight puckering on the tongue. Not overly funky/horse-blankety but enough present for those who may like that. A nice note of peaches lurks somewhere in the background mingling with an nice earthy, spicey, yeasty quality. White pepper coats the tongue and lingers with some earthy flavors. Fairly tannic as well it seems.

Mouthfeel is very dry. The dryness also leaves this tannic quality on the tongue, reminiscent of (for lack of a better descriptor) cat tongue.

Overall a good beer. This is not a style that I have experimented in much. My only other gueze is 3F Oude gueze. I preferred the 3F but this is a decent substitute.

I didn't plan on making a second appearance today, but why not --

I think I'm done with pumpkin beers already. This is my 3rd or 4th one this season and my palate fatigues easily of nutmeg.

Uinta Punk'n clocks in at 5% ABV. It's a rust colored beer with a tan hat that recedes to a nice thick collar and light film. Nice bands of lacing.

I'm afraid the aroma is full of the same spice band of brothers we all know and love -- nutmeg and clove making bigger impressions than the rest.

Tastes .... like a pumpkin ale. A little bit bready up front with an emerging spicy hop-cinnamon overtone. It's really kind of bland but at the same time I kind of appreciate the fact that it's not a spice bomb.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied, slightly dry.

Overall, just absolutely forgettable in the pumpkin ale genre. I get it though. I drink a few pumpkin beers each Autumn to set the mood. They have their time and place I guess. I'll pass on this one in the future.

Julius Echter Hefe-Weiss Dunkel has a very thick, mauve head, an initially clear, fiercely-bubbly, rust-brown appearance, and heavy lacing globs left on the glass. The beer clouds up, once the caked sediment is swished loose and poured in. The aroma is of spiced bread, prunes, banana, and banana cream pie. Taste is of those elements, with no bitterness factor, but some acidity showing up. Mouthfeel is light to medium, and Julius Echter Hefe-Weiss Dunkel finishes drinkable and on the dry side.

Greetings friends, and Happy NBS from soggy ATL. The rain continues...but we're grateful to be spared much of flooding besieging our neighbors in the Carolinas.

Today's beer is another local one, Wendell Gee, which is a peanut butter variant of Burnt Hickory Brewery's Big Shanty Graham Cracker Stout. Obtained a couple days ago as part of BHB's Die Kreuzen Pumpkin Fest. Huge shoutout to @Hedeen for awesome tour and great conversation. He's been at the forefront among our state's brewers in remaining true to the cause of Georgia beer after the awful regulations that were handed down earlier this week. So, appreciation for that.

Served from a crowler in my trusty signature DFH glass. Appearance is an opaque dark brown with nary a trace of light penetrating, even at the edges. A thin beige head that settles to a collar that remains throughout. Moderate lacing.

Aroma of roasted peanuts and caramel at first--salty and sweet in equal measures. Roasted malts follow and envelop the rest of the aroma with some cola and bittersweet chocolate notes in the background. Taste largely follows with nose with an excellent roasted peanut note leading the way. In short, Wendell Gee tastes like a Payday candy bar in the glass. No joke. All the flavor are here. Salted peanut and sweet caramel. But it's still a big stout with an excellent roasted malt profile. A bit of the cinnamon that marks the original Big Shanty is discernible, too.

Mouthfeel is thick, verging on oily, with carbonation. Just right. Alcohol becomes a bit noticeable as the beer warms but never gets in the way.

Another killer beer for BHB. I don't like to give numerical scores, but if pressed, Wendell Gee is definitely in 4.5 to 4.75 territory. Awesome! Cheers!

Golden Road Back Home Gingerbread Stout.

Appearance - Dark brownish caramel with quick dissipating head.

    Smell - Loads of cinnamon.

Taste - Even more cinnamon plus vast amounts of vanilla and chocolate.

Mouth-feel - Above average, nice and decently chewy .

In closing- Great beer for the style, top 5 no doubt

Poured from the bottle into a tulip glass. Bottled August 21st 2015.

Real neat looker. Deep red and ruby body, not unlike most raspberry brews but has a very distinct brown darkness to it unlike any other. Ultra fine rising carbonation in the middle of the beer, litteraly microscopic column that can barely be seen not because opacity but because it's so small. Head manages a weak two fingers but settles to a thin puck and nice creamy collar. Tan like in appearance but with a purple hue from no doubt picking up the body's color.

Excellent fruited aroma and wild mix. Raspberry galore, even an almost juicy peach quality, but then some nice soft vinegar and sweet acids come through. Excellent mix of sweet fruit and sour tang. Even some hints of flanders red to brune style malt quality like character and sweet oaky wood.

Palate is just singing with nice complexity. Picking out huge raspberry notes and a vinous quality on first sip. Dry champagne sparkle and crispness coming off like a fruited bubbly. Sharp finish and tangy fruit juice flavors as well in the aftertaste. Palate bounces between nice round feel and crisp light bubbles. The funk factor seems much dialed down and just hints a little, giving more of an excellent contrast, making the fruit sweeter, the malt even a sense of brown sweetness even more so and just so subtle to accent.

    Fantastic fruited wild.

Completely and totally agree with your review/assessment in the taste category. Huge let down in the flavor dept.; not a spice bomb, but it needs more...something! The only thing that is not forgettable is that it is a forgettable pumpkin ale (thanks to the late Yogi Berra for inspiration on that one.:grinning:)

Greetings, fellow NBSers, and thanks to @smakawhat for stepping up,

I missed last week’s get- together as I was out of town. My Bro’s family was coming across the mountains to visit my folks’ place, so I drove down to said parental palace as well and met my newest niece Mallory (3 months old on the nose) for the first time. As the family beer geek, I showed up with Ice Harbor’s Atomic Gold and a crowler of Paradise Creek’s Huckleberry Pucker, both previous hads. I did have a couple new beers earlier last week that I meant to toss into last week’s NBS but wound up too busy. Here they are for your reading pleasure before I come up with something for this week’s NBS:

An IPA from the Washington side of the Columbia Gorge that was rather lackluster http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/29765/95757/?ba=woemad

and a coffee-cocoa variation on Iron Horse’s Irish Death http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/11212/50908/?ba=woemad

Listed as an imperial stout, it’s really more like a robust brown ale with the aforementioned additives and came off pretty mediocre.

Pretty nice, early fall day for NBS’s man in Spokane. Fairly clear and 66 degrees. Both the college teams I follow were idle yesterday, so I spent it binge watching House of Cards – the American version (I like the remade/reimagined version, but the original UK version is one of my all-time faves). NBS SPOILER ALERT: Later today I will probably be having my very first beer from Oklahoma.
