Our home brew club meet here tonight and got a full tour from the owner and the brew master. They have put a lot of time and effort into planning this place to the last detail. The brewing set up is impressive to say the least and they have lots of room to grow. There focus will be on German style beers and they have a game plan and process that will hopefully put Des Moines on the map beer wise! They will be tapping their first beer tomorrow it will be a Hefeweizen. I was Leary about how good it would be at first. However after listening to the owner tell his story and hear about all the work he put into this place to get everything just right you cant help but expect good things from them. I wish them the best of luck because Iowa needs another good brewery!

Cool. I will add that to my list of places to check out. Along with Number 7 brewery.

I was leery about them as well, but it appears they went out and found a highly trained brewer and did the step up right. I am a little weirded out that they have never run a test batch throught the system until they brewed Hannah or at least it appeared so based on the Facebook posts. Maybe they did?

I need to join IBU- only been brewing for 10 years now. Now finding the time...

So do they have a tap room then or just a tour? Is the tour open to the public or is it a private thing? Thanks for the info, very exciting!

Thanks for the info; I'll be in downtown Des Moines next week for a night (Tues 8/28) and was curious about this place, among others. Looks like I just added one more beer place to visit...

Its not a tap room its a brewery with a full service restaurant, As for tours I really don't know how that works we got a tour because they invited us.

I know this thread is a couple weeks old, but just thought I'd 'bump' it because I went last week and posted a review yesterday. Very likable place, good food, Hannah was well-made and very tasty...

Anyone now what's up with Exile?

Their headbrewer announced on twitter that he is available for hire or consulting. Pretty disappointing, I had really been enjoying their beers lately.

His tweet seemed pretty straight-forward. Plus, he pretty much deleted all Exile-related tweets from what I could see.

Which is a real bummer. I thought he and Exile would be a good match. Hope he stays in Iowa!

I've only heard parts of the story from the Sorensen side, so perhaps take this with a grain of salt. There was contention between who owned the recipes he created and Exile didn't agree with what Sorensen wanted and vice versa so they separated.

I can't wait to see what Exile and Sorensen do next. Best of luck to the both of them.

Hopefully Exile didn't want to arm wrestle over that garbage "IPA" they put out.

Nah...that IPA was pretty awful. No butthurt here. Never really been blown away by anything Exile has released, but they were definitely heading in the right direction with Eric at the helm it seemed. Hopefully the can continue without him and hopefully he finds a home to brew again in Iowa.

    Cool post though, bruh.

Chill Clinton has made me hesitant to ever try another beer from Exile or Sorensen if he came up with and brewed it. That was some bad brew.

From the pic in his most recent tweet, looks like Sorensen is in Duluth tonight (I've been many times and that bridge is unmistakable). Makes me wonder if he's interviewing for the open brewmaster spot at Fitger's?

I really felt like they were going in the right direction with Beatnik, the Bohemians, Gorilla Press and Elephant Squat. And I enjoyed the Oktoberfest a lot too. But the IPA and Chill Clinton were both misses for me. I love their brewpub and their food, so I will keep trying their beers in the hopes that they continue to improve!

I hope Sorenson doesn't leave the metro, or at least the state. :slight_frown:

I really liked Beatnik, Oktoberfest was pretty good. Chill Clinton was interesting, but I only wanted about 4 of the 6.

I didn't have the IPA or Oktoberfest, but I really enjoyed everything else listed here...including Chill Clinton. Maybe I'm the only one, but I found it to be a really interesting beer and liked it a lot.
