In light of the other thread about the Esquire article on the "Ten Great Beers Forgotten", I think a Beeradvocate thread on the topic could be fun. Especially since I feel (and some of you did as well) that the author of the article missed the boat a bit, listing beers that people ARE drinking, but either no one is talking about, or the ratings aren't particularly high. I also narrowed it down to three, I like the smaller number better.

Basically, what are your favorite classics that sit on the shelves at your local liquor store? World class beers that over time no one longer talks about on Beeradvocate, and/or the ratings have dropped. Here's my three just to get the thread going, I could list more, but I feel this gives a good idea of what I'm talking about.

    1) Duvel

    2) Samuel Smith's Oatmeal Stout

    How about Dreadnaught?
Still gets great reviews, but rarely shows up on lists of people's top or most sought after IPAs. Or at least it seems that way to me. I don't think it sits on shelves, but it's not distributed here so I don't know.

Could throw Hop Devil in the same category as Hoptical.

I totally disagree. When Hoptical Illusion became the hot product it was a blow your face of IPA at almost 70IBU and huge tropical notes with chewiness. Hop Devil was far less IBUs.

Here in Maryland, Heavy Seas Loose Cannon gets overlooked because of duration and market saturation but it's a terrific IPA.
Ranger IPA from New Belgium and Torpedo from Sierra Nevada are other examples.

    Agreed on #1.
    I personally dislike #2, so...
I don't think I've had #3 since 2008. Might be time to revisit that beer.

    My top 3 -

    1. Alesmith Speedway Stout - fantastic coffee stout, very strong, available year-round... can't recall the last time anyone referred to it.
    2. Firestone Walker Union Jack - in the great IPA chase, people have kind of forgotten this one. Hell, I went to a reputable bottle shop I frequent form time to time looking for a sixer of cans or bottles and they had neither. "Just not a big enough deal, too common, " was what I was told when I asked if they had it.
    3. Anything from DFH, whether it's the "minute" IPAs, World Wide Stout, Palo Santo Marron, etc...

French Canadians at that. I always appreciated the "pretense" that Unibroue put into their beer (descriptions, pouring instructions, etc.) Gotta love that arrogance. But, hey, Unibroue has the beer to back it up.

I'm an IPA/IIPA guy. Every week I walk past Stone IPA, SN Torpedo, and DFH 60 to see what's new for the week. But when I do go back to these every once in a while, they can still hang with the new wave of great IPAs out there, and with great consistency.
