Here in the States I'm not too keen on beer in the morning, at least with breakfast. I just don't generally find something that pairs well with what I usually eat for breakfast (oatmeal stout and actual oatmeal don't actually go that well together... and is there an IPA that could accompany Count Chocula?)

However, when I was living in Prague, a breakfast beer was not at all unusual. The breakfast I usually had while there was bread, cured meats, cheese, fruit. That kind of thing goes fairly well with a crisp Czech pilsner.

Man, this post sure started out with a bunch of beer prudes. Just because someone has a beer in the morning doesn't mean they're an alcoholic. I certainly don't do it before I go to work, school activities for my kids, or if I have other important things to do, but I regularly get together with a bunch of buddies for breakfast and Premiere League soccer on Sat. or Sun mornings. Last weekend we had brisket that was smoked all night long and mac and cheese in a cast iron skillet on the green egg along with Imperial Biscotti Break, Griffin BA Coffee Imperial Stout and a couple of others. Some of you may be distressed to hear that sometimes I actually eat waffles and orange juice without any beer at all for dinner.

If on a Saturday morning and I'm not doing a damn thing the rest of the day... some xocoveza or founders breakfast stout works. I cracked some bcbs coffee with the fam last christmas morning with breakfast and it was pretty damn wonderful.

On holidays, we have huge family gatherings and my whole family has a drink or two in the morning (especially Christmas). Even then it's not a big deal if you a crack a beer before noon. Non-evening beer is only on weekends/days off/nothing important or the odd lunch when a group of us go out. Stouts'n'Waffles are a good thing.

You can't drink all day if you don't start in the morning!

Not a fan of morning beers, unless I'm tailgating for a noon Clemson game. Nothing screams "I'm an alcoholic" like drinking a beer in the morning, IMO, especially if it's a regular occurrence. I am good for nothing for the rest of the day, except a nap, if I start drinking that early as well. Sometimes I'll have a beer with lunch on the weekends, but usually I dont crave a beer until after work/around 5pm.

So in your mind someone who drinks morning beers a few times a week is more likely an alcoholic than someone who drinks several at night? What makes someone an alcoholic isn't about when, unless that when is an irresponsible time. Nothing irresponsible about drinking in the morning if you handle your business.

I find it highly inappropriate to drink before you go into work, and yes that is a warning sign of being an alcoholic, if you were unaware. If I worked all night and came home in the morning, then an 8am beer sounds very reasonable to me, but to wake up and start drinking for no reason, or especially before you go into work, is not a good sign...just ask Steve Sarkisian how thats working out for him over at USC right now! Each to their own, but I dont know anyone that can "handle their business" all day after having a few drinks in the morning.

The thread is about morning beers. It's not about beers before work. The two may be one and the same. I have morning beers on the weekends and days off. Sometimes I have them during the workweek on days when I have to be up at 3am and I'm mostly done with my workday before noon. Again, it comes down to just being responsible. The time of day isn't an indication of being an alcoholic, the frequency and how you mix it with your responsibilities is.

A nice roasty porter or stout is awesome in the morning. Trouble is for me finding one that's not high abv because i have a tendency to drink very fast, ex; drink almost half the beer in the first pull. They are my favorite, since i cant drink regular coffee, the coffee notes to most dark beers are sufficient more than enough

My friends, who are diehard German beer guys, like Euro lagers in the AM with breakfast, we call it Kegs and Eggs

Lol. You must be new here

In all seriousness, there's a difference between waking up with shaking hands, and you physically cannot proceed without a beer or two or youll be ill, and enjoying a beer with breakfast on a day off. im sure its even more socially acceptable in other countries too.

I can't do it. Feels like alcoholism to me. I don't do screwdrivers or mimosas either. Plus, on the weekends I am usually going to exercise at some point, and as a general rule I don't drink before exercise. Even 11 AM feels wrong.

Occasionally, if I've got friends/family over and we're planning a day of beer, food and activities, we might split a low-ABV beer with breakfast. I don't think it's too different from the mimosas at brunch that my gf has. Last time I had buddies from WA visiting, I made a huge ol' breakfast and we split 5 ways a Breakfast Stout.
