Often in restaurants, rare in craft beer bars. Restaurants don't usually rinse their glasses like bars or breweries do.

If it's soap or any sort of food or makeup residue, than it will change the flavour of the beer. Sometimes you can even smell it in the glass. A fingerprint? maybe not so much but a potential bacterial contributor to your morning hangover. I'm satisfied with a good rinse though, anything that would impact the beer at that point has been washed away.

Out it's a bummer but at home it's just dust.

Dirty glassware doesn't bother me as much as when I point it out to the bartender and they look at me like I'm crazy.

Here's another twist on the occasional dirty glass. I ordered a SNPA at a Beef O'Brady's restaurant and it was clear that the server had very recently applied some sort of lotion to her hands since I could feel it on the outside of the glass as well as smell it quite clearly (it was a nice scent but it didn't go with the SNPA). I motioned her back and politely explained the problem and although she seemed a bit confused, she took it away. The bartender returned with the fresh (lotionless) glass and apologized. The next time the server came by apologized also. She explained that she didn't drink beer (nobody's perfect) and just never realized the lotion could be a problem. I'm curious if this is a regular occurrence or just an isolated incident?

I just order my beer in frozen shaker pints so the frost hides the bubbles.

I can't remember the last time I was given a dirty glass , it would have been many, many years ago. Bar owners take this seriously. In fact they often insist I have a clean glass when I go back for another pint of the same !

In my experience, isolated. Also I'm betting that it won't ever happen ever again with that particular server. :-)

My biggest pet peeve only because it's so easily preventable. One quick look before you pour and you can tell if it's dirty. No reason i should be handed a glass with lipstick on the rim.

The broken pint glass is the one that kills me. Seriously you didn't see the fn chip at the top with the long running crack down the side when you were pouring.

At places that aren't serious about beer. Quite often, because it's not a priority to look for, nor view nucleation points as bad or detrimental to whatever it is you ordered.
At places that are. Rarely, if ever because their bartenders are trained to look before they rinse.

Pretty obvious that they just pour and serve on automation at that point

This is one of those things that also influences my tipping a bit. I mean, pouring a beer is pretty damn easy and if you aren't going to take the time to do it right I certainly won't be tipping handsomely either.

I rarely order beer outside of places that really specialize in it now. Part of the reason is that I frequently get frosted or dirty glassware, part of it is that I feel like the cost is typically too high for a beer that I wouldn't normally order, and part of it is paying to much for a beer that I don't really want that is served in a dirty, frosted glass.

Dirty is subjective. Some would consider three different shades of pubic hair and a toenail to be dirty.

Maybe it's me but all I got from the picture is that it made me thirsty.

Not really.. but I'll tell you what's worse than dirty glassware is dirty tap lines. That shit will completely ruin a good beer.

I see it in the "what beer are you drinking now" thread quite often.

Totally, this is by far the worst thing that can happen to draught beer. There's a few places I won't visit anymore after getting some nasty dirty line headaches and awful beer.
