So, I want to visit breweries in my home state for the experiences themselves, not just the beers. These are places that give me a story to share when I return to my local hangout. Recommendations?

I recommend a couple from my area, somewhat. First is Valkyrie Brewing (formerly Viking Brewing). Second is Daves Brewfarm. Both make good to great beers and the location and buildings themselves make for good stories. Cheers!

Thirsty Pagan way up in Superior is a really cool location with good beer. Some of the Milwaukee stops are fun. Lakefront has a really fun tour. Tyrenena in Lake Mills is a really cool place. Basically the town center of entertainment.

Where are you from? Milwaukee has a really great bar scene that's worth checking out and enjoying. Roman's, Palm, and Sugar Maple are all in the same neighborhood. Roman's and Sugar Maple have a ton of local beer on tap and great crowds.

Lucette just opened a restaurant in their brewery. Stopped in last week. The pizzas are made in a Woodfire stove & are amazing. Inexpensive too. Most were $7-$12. Also have a bunch of fun beers on tap that you don't see from them. A handful of guest taps too like Rush River, O'So & New Glarus.
This place is definitely one of the nice experiences in the Midwest.
Only complaint is parking lot is gravel & it was raining so kinda muddy

Lakefront has a very cool space and nice tour. I've also heard good things about Lucette. I just went to Central Waters for the first time for the Great Amherst Beer Festival / Black Gold release and loved it.

Eau Claire Brewing Projekt is tiny but the beer was great when I stopped in this summer.

Central Waters might be a little out of the way but it's a fun place.

New Glarus is interesting but mostly a self-guided tour and no true "tap room" experience.

I agree that it's not your normal taproom experience, but after doing a tour and then taking your beer outside on a nice day and sitting on the hilltop overlooking the town is a great experience. It's close to beer nirvana.

This, plus there are some really fantastic little pubs/restaurants in town that are worth checking out while you are there. It's an unusual and unique location for a brewery. I've been to Central Waters and Lakefront and while they have good tours and good beer, New Glarus is the quintessential Wisconsin brewery that I think most fits the ask in this topic.

The downsides (as previously mentioned) are no real tour and nothing unique on tap outside of scheduled special releases. A little underwhelming if you show up on a random day in the winter.

I've heard this is great, but needs to be scheduled way in advance - http://www.newglarusbrewing.com/index.cfm/hht/tour/

If you're interested in the story and not so much a beer, I'm going to go ahead and throw out Minhas in Monroe. It's pretty close to New Glarus, so you could easily hit both of those.

The beer is not what I'd call good, but it's old and has a lot of history. They make awesome cane sodas too.

Agreed. New Glarus' outdoor drinking areas are beautiful (the nearby town is nice too), and the overall experience is well worth the trip. Easily one of my favorite breweries to visit, especially when the weather is decent.

If you go to NG and get the wrist band, they give you a coupon for a free NG beer at one of the bars or restaurants in town. I suggest going to sugar river pizza company. They have good food and 80 plus craft beers in stock

I have to second Valkyrie Brewing in Dallas. It's cool hat such a small town can have a great brewery. I don't know when I'll make it back, but it was well worth the 2 1/2 hour drive.

Yeah, good call. Sugar River does have great pizza, and it's less than a block from the Chalet Landhaus Inn (if you're staying the night), which is a fun little place to stay.

If your in Milwaukee, don't pass on checking out Miller. It's pretty cool to see how a large scale brewery operates. Hitting that and then Lakefront gives you a pretty interesting comparison.

Lakefront is great. Maybe it's not the best beer around, but the folks who work there are, almost without exception, fantastic. And the tour is great fun. Then go have a beer down by the river out back and enjoy the view.
