Recently, my first Fed Ex box leaked. Filled out the claim form and got rejected.

Shit happens I guess, so I chalked the box up as a loss.

Today I received my credit card statement in the mail, and my card got hit $30 shipping charge for the box they trashed and didn't deliver. This really pisses me off.

Is there anything I can do about this?

Agreed, let it be so that you don't have to worry about future shipments and/or deliveries to your house. I had one box leak on me but FedEx was nice enough to pack it in a new box and return it. Learned my lesson, every beer is put in a zip lock bag now.

Don't poke a sleeping bear. Yea you're out $30, that sucks, but think of it as an investment- that you will never recover... That is until you get your next box of beer, and that feeling of a trade gone right w an RTP. You poke that bear, don't be mad if it wakes up and is more pissed than you are...

It is interesting to see some other opinions on this, thank you. I am still trying to get myself on board.

Can anyone chime in with what happened to them when they submitted a claim?

Specifically, if you got paid for your claim, we're you charged shipping? If your claim was denied, were you charged shipping?

I'm curious what reason they gave you for claim denial.

@mikevanatta may be able to shed some light on claim submission process.

Did they know it was alcohol/beer?

Interesting responses. I would definitely contact FedEx to try to get the $30 back. IMHO, if they didn't deliver the package, especially if they trashed/broke something, they certainly don't deserve to be paid for their "service".

The worst they can do is say no. And the answer will definitely be no if you don't ask. I can't imagine they'd take yet another look at the file & say "Oh, this guy was violating our TOS, let's go after him!" I haven't heard of them taking a serious run at anybody for anything beer-shipping related.

I've had a package leak and FedEx returned it to me. When I got my credit card statement and saw the delivery fee, I called them and asked why I should pay for a package that was not delivered. They agreed and refunded my delivery charge.

Agreed on calling customer service - even if they knew it was beer, the worst they are going to do is say no.

The letter basically stated shipping alcohol is against policy.

It's on the claim denial as the reason? I know you get a letter if it's "Improper Alcohol Shipment" warning, but didn't know that they actually cite that as the reason to deny the claim of loss/damaged package. Since service has not rendered, they should at least refund you the shipping charge. What if someone honestly didn't know that it's against their policy to ship alcohol without properly labeling the box?

Oh, well if you got the 'naughty boy no alcohol' letter, then I would imagine they just point at that as the reason to still charge you...

Still, they know you sent alcohol already, so you have nothing to lose from calling customer service

I had 2 boxes sent to me recently break and leak. The boxes were in my city's shipping center. They threw out the broken beer and reboxed the intact bottles and had me pick it up with no issue. I just figured Fedex knows tons of people are shipping beer and can't resist the business.

I was always told that without a proof of delivery - a scan entered by the delivery driver when he makes the drop - the customer is within his right to claim a refund. It was always that simple. No delivery = no money for the company.

That said, they may hold this one in exception since they noted it being alcohol in the box. Honestly, in my head, it's a coin flip. You can call and request a refund on the basis that there is no proof of delivery. However, if they tell you no because your decision to ship alcohol voids the shipper agreement, I wouldn't be surprised. The worst they can do is say no. Don't let anyone scare you with this "don't poke the bear" crap. FedEx isn't a mafia, they're a customer-driven business. They won't take your birthday away.

I should add, if you do decide to call, be nice. It's not a cliche that they're just waiting for you to yell or curse so they can hang up on you. Be sincere, tell them you're sorry and you were unclear on the rules. Ask them if they'd be willing to give you a pass and help out with a refund. Assure them you're not going to break the rules again. It might just work.

With UPS at least, it seems that if they feel like it was their fault, they will repack your box and ship it the rest of the way so you don't lose out on that shipping cost. I always assumed they did this to avoid people asking for their money back in situations where they are not at fault. This happened to me once and they even referenced the fact that they broke my beer bottles but that they were packed well so they repacked and continued shipping. They must have said "beer bottles" 10 times int he voicemail and letter that I received. If they feel that it was not their fault they will either ship the beer back to you, or trash it. They aren't going to reimburse you for what they feel is bad packing when they theoretically could have shipped your package from NJ to CA only to have it broken the day of delivery.

    UPDATE

For anyone who might be interested, I was successful!

I called and plain and simple said, I had a damaged box, the claim was denied, but I was still charged for shipping. Could I have the shipping charge refunded?

She said, I can take care of that for you, put me on hold for a minute, and then said you're all set, your credit card will be credited.

I can not believe how well it went. Yay!
