Here's a question that could easily go in the "Visiting Portland" threat or on the breweriana, so please excuse my hubris for making a dedicated thread.

Here's the story, for anyone interested:
I'm visiting Portland for a few days come mid-November. I am flying Southwest--no baggage fees!--in order to bring back back all sorts of treats and goodies. I've never tried packing a full growler in my luggage before and I don't think I want to chance it, but a 32 oz. growler would fit just about perfectly alongside all of the bottles, books, and bags of coffee I hope to snag. (What's that? Those books and bags of coffee are taking up valuable space that could be used for more beer?) So:

Going purely on aesthetics what's the coolest looking 32 oz. growler available in Portland? Swingtop and/or screwtop. (Hopefully there's something delicious to fill it with as well.) I'm looking for nice artwork, snappy design, fond memories every time I crack it open... that will all have to be covered up due to California growler fill regulations.

    Thanks!

I have a 64 oz Crux branded one. I know Boneyard has one as well. Not sure if any breweries have a branded 32 oz version, but it's fantastic for temperature control and sealing.

come visit us at Growler Guys in SE PDX and fill up all the 32oz cans you can fit into your luggage. Crowlers for the win.

I think Bailey's might even sell those hydroflasks with their logo on it as well. That would probably be a good way to not worry about glass breaking in your luggage.

i'd trust a crowler way more than a growler. has anyone else had issues flying with growlers? i feel like the temperature change (and maybe even some pressure differentials) have some negative impacts on the brew quality.

I had a friend bring me back a glass growler from Maui Brewing for Christmas one year (filled with some one-off IPA made on the island). According to him, the beer tasted just like it did at their brewpub earlier that week.

But that's why I recommended a hydroflask. Vacuum sealed and aluminum lined helps with temperature issues.

32 oz displaces 0.0334201 cubic feet.

Let's say your checked bag is 27" x 21" x 14". That would be 7938 cubic inches or 4.59375 cubic feet.

That would mean you could (theoretically) carry 137.5 crowlers in your checked bag.

Let's round to 137 crowlers for sake of argument. Don't want to be greedy.

Let's assume the specific gravity is 1.00 and you are traveling at 60F. That would be 62.37 pounds per cubic foot so your suitcase would only weigh 286.5 pounds. Plus a couple of extra pounds for the weight of the aluminum I neglected.

Go see Growler guys, they will hook you up......

I'm sure the OP knows this, but Southwest allows two 50 lb checked bags per passenger.

Go to Fred Meyer and buy one of their store-branded 32-ounce growlers. Maybe even one of these with the nifty PNW tree graphics:

That way you can go back and tell people that good beer is so pervasive in Portland, you can buy growlers at a supermarket.

I mean, the hydroflasks are a fine idea, but you can get those lots of places besides Portland. But how many cities are there where you can you walk into a supermarket and buy a growler? That is a Portland memory you can remember every time you get that growlito filled. (And heck, it might even be generic enough to get filled in California.)

Also: Good call on taking back "books...and bags of coffee."

Sigh...then you work it backwards. 50 pounds of beer with a SG of 1.0 (at 60F) would displace about 0.8 cubic feet.

That would be about 24 crowlers (per bag) or 48 crowlers total. Give or take..........

He could just ship the rest. Plus, OP, you can buy beer, including growlers, airside at the PDX airport, so you can stuff some last minute purchases into your carry-on. So leave room for that.

That's actually a cool looking growler. Why doesn't Fred Meyer here in WA offer this?

    Yep, I thought so too.

I know it's a Kroger store, and those are everywhere, but the Fred Meyer name is definitely a NW thing. (Founded and headquartered in Portland.)

Fred Meyer is absolutely a NW thing. Much like Subarus, I know I'm back home in the PNW when I start seeing them.

McMenamins always have some cool artwork. Not sure what their growlers look like.

I might be showing my age here, but is that a new code word for (legal) weed?

I think "bags of tea" would be a better code word for legal weed, but that's probably just me showing my age.

Obligatory beer: Speaking of tea, Rogue made a Big Ass beer which featured Lapsang Souchong tea. Can't remember if it was good or not.
