    Hey all!
First time all grain Brewer here looking for a hop heavy West Coast IPA recipe. I'll be likely ordering offline so sky's the limit in terms of ingredients. It'll be a 5-6 gal batch.

One question I have is seeing some recipes that call for 8 gallon boils, could I use the same amount of grain/hops and do a 5-6 gal boil? I mean, how much would that throw off the recipe?

8 gallons seems excessive for the boil volume, unless you're using whole hops instead of pellets. I always use pellets and for an IPA normally shoot for 13 gallons in the kettle for a 10 gallon batch

Keep it simple on your first attempt. 100% US two-row for the grain bill would be a solid choice if you want the hops to dominate.

Other than maybe a complex hop bill, you probably don't want anything too exotic. Check out APA IPA:

Yes it's good . . . I'm brewing it again this week for the fourth time. Caveat: 2014 hops (current year) are just now becoming available. If you don't ask, there is a good chance you'll be shipped 2013 hops (last year's crop). It does make a difference.

My boil volume experience is same as kellyst.

I wanted to throw in too that I dont do a lot of West Coast IPAS, but as far as grain bill goes it would be mainly 2 row and at least 5% sugar.

    Great tips!

Creatively I was only going to experiment with the hop adds; Galaxy and Citra were my initial thoughts.

Why add 5% sugar? What kind of sugar?

The recipes at BYO are 6 gallon boils for 5 gallon batches.

Beersmithrecipes.com for example lists the Green Flash IPA at a 6 gal batch, 8.97 gal boil size. Hence where I'm getting my numbers.

I use 8.5 gallon boils with pellets. I think of you every time I dump a gallon of trub and 0.75 gallon of beer.

Are you doing a 3 hour boil? : ) (like Gilligan)

If that's what you want to brew, then you should scale the recipe to your batch size unless you want it to be 25% stronger than intended.

Any kind...table sugar is cheapest...it will dry your IPA out if use in lieu of malt (base/and/or crystal)

    '6.75 gallon post boil'

5.5 gallon into fermenter plus a 0.25 gallon starter

I know you're drinking that in between the two : )
