What is the best bottle shop in LA (preferably Redondo Beach and north of there)? I'm looking for a place with a great selection and great service/knowledge. I'm in town from Texas and stopped by Whole Foods and Total Wine. Both had a decent selection, but everyone I talked to had zero knowledge of the seasonals and good beers that I can't get in Texas. I was highly disappointed in both places. Where do you guys recommend?

So is that what the community is like on here? Keep it all to yourself?

For Redondo Beach it is Adam's, Select (which are like two blocks from each other), and Number 1. How knowledgeable the staff are is going to depend on whose working, so you'll probably want to figure out for yourself what is available in Texas and what isn't. All 3 stores have instagram accounts where they post new stuff that has come in.

In Torrance there is 3Ten, which I haven't been to, but seems good enough based on their Instagram posts.

just my opinion but when you go into to a shop it's better to know what you are going in to get because when you ask a clerk for suggestion they might give you one you might not like and since there is so much beer coming out every week then i would think it's hard for them to know exactly so I would go to a store with a decent selection and ask for any new stuff that they just got in and that would be what it's season. hope that helps, I know it could be frustrating when you can't find what you want. good luck.

Smog City is also in the area if you want to try some great beers. Also believe El Segundo is fairly close if you like hops. Same as most said Adams, and Select Beer Store are your places to go. If you want things that aren't really available in Texas and the people working don't have the knowledge, just use your Beer Advocate APP on your phone to search things up that look appealing.

Also if you want to drive a little, I've found the Whole Foods in Santa Monica off of Lincoln ALWAYS has a great selection and great beers on tap as well.

No, I said that in jest. Mostly because I don't know any bottle shops in the south bay, which is mostly what you're looking for it sounds like. If you want to go further into LA there's Cap'n Cork, Sunset Beer, Ramirez, and Bill's.

Select also has draft on top of a great bottle selection. Really good spot.

Whole Foods in El Segundo is closer to Redondo Beach and has as good of selection in bottles and on tap.

OP, I second these recommendations. These are two of the best breweries in LA and are within a short drive of Redondo Beach.

Question - How the fuck... or why the fuck would you expect a convenience store clerk or market employee of a California store to know what is a beer you can't get in Texas?! That seems like something you need to already know before you step foot into a store and not put the burden on the overworked employee to do the homework for you in breaking down what different state's distribution comes down to.

It's not that we're tight lipped about this sort of shit, but it's a discussion that has been done to death. With a little search you could find a dozen threads that get into which are the better stores to go to. Most of all, these sorts of questions typically boils down to someone from out of the area expecting Firestone Barrel Aged beers and Pliny to sit on every shelf as if it was a never ending supply of it. So that's why we're pretty broad in terms of answering this question. Because you probably should do the research in seekbrew to see what you can and can't get in Texas here on your own.

Whole Foods, especially the one in El Segundo is an excellent spot for beers. But I wouldn't expect the employee to know what I can or can't get in a couple of states away. Let alone expect the beer guy to know something about an organic soap fragrance in the cosmetic department.

Wow - aren't you a barrel of sunshine? I asked the employee about good local beers and he didn't have any recommendations. I did some research coming in, but I wanted a supposed expert's opinion on local or California beers. It's pretty reasonable to go into a large beer/liquor store and expect the beer manager to know a fair amount about local beers.

Relax. I'll even buy you a beer to help take the edge off.

not sure how it is in Texas, but out here if you go to a big chain store you're not likely to find anyone who actually knows anything, unfortunately. Total Wine and BevMo is like what Best Buy is for electronics: a place that hires 15 year olds who don't have a clue about anything. even at places like Whole Foods you're not always going to get someone who knows beer.

people on the Pac forum are generally super helpful and polite, even when a thread question has been posted a thousand times before (like this one)

I appreciate your being courteous. There are probably several threads on this on here, but I really enjoy the interaction between BA members rather than just reading posts. I travel quite a bit and really enjoy meeting BA guys in the cities where I frequent. It's fun for me to learn about small unknown breweries that I might not hear about otherwise. The craft beer scene is really new to me and I'm doing my best to soak up information and knowledge like a sponge - this forum has been amazing for that!

My brother and I ended up stopping at Adam's Bottle Boutique and received amazing service! Picked up some stuff that we can't get in Dallas and had a wonderful experience. Before we leave today, we are going to stop by 55 Degree in Glendale to sample some beers and maybe buy a few more bottles.
