I'm looking for some tips for places to drink in Dongguan, Guangzhou, Haikou, Guilin, Yangshou, Dali and Lijiang. Any tips for me?
If you are passing through Kunming, there are a few good places to get imported brews there, at a price of course. Otherwise, I'm not as familiar with Dali and Lijiang as far as imports, but know you can basically get Dali Beer anywhere in Yunnan Province.
Haven't been there, but I understand the place to go in Dali is Bad Monkey: Bad Monkey Brew House (坏猴子啤酒, Huài Hóuzi Píjiǔ) No. 59, Renmin Road Dàlǐ 671003 大理市人民路59号 Tel: +86 (0872) 267-5460 [email protected] http://www.badmonkeybar.com/brewery https://www.facebook.com/BadMonkeyBeer http://www.weibo.com/badmonkeybar
I'm going here soon, and i think this was really helpful. Might be too late, tho. http://www.cityweekend.com.cn/guangzhou/blog/finding-craft-beer-in-guangzhou/
Saw that article. It was surprising to see the different places in Guangzhou, other than The Strand which I had already heard of. Seems to be roughly on par with the scene in Hong Kong. Given South China Seas Brewing (Hong Kong Brewing Co.) started in 1994, it's disappointing to see how little progress there had been in Hong Kong until Beertopia launched.
I live in guangzhou now and tons to do here. Strand, rest area beer hub, beer hardcore, my beer taproom, lazy guys, lazy beer, bottle shop in jiamsheliu, standing goose and my craft beer association! www.meetup.com/gzcraftbeer
I've been to Bad Monkey and found it very lacking - I heard nothing but good things about it, but some friends and I went there and couldn't even finish our beers. We went in Sept. 2014. I got their wheat beer, can't remember the name - friends got a few other kinds. I'll give them another try someday, but across the board their beers left a lot to be desired.
Shangri-la beer (based out of Shangri-la / Zhongdian, but available at some places in Lijiang) has some decent brews. I prefer their stout.
In fairness, I recently met a couple of guys who told me that Bad Monkey was in transition with their brewmaster(s) around the time I went. They spoke very highly of it and encouraged me to give it another try.
