Just as an example: say a brewery took home a medal at the 2015 GABF and they want people to know this fact. The owner or rep. would like to have all of the bottle shops they have beer sold in (or at least the better craft bottle shops) to put a little flyer or sticker under their beer on the shelf or fridge that says "2015 GABF gold medal winner" just as an example. How does this work or not allowed? I see wine sold in the stores doing this sort of thing all the time, but I never see beer being promoted for winning contests through shelf marketing. I see RateBeer and BeerAdvocate ratings posted by some shop owners, and IMO it really does help move those beers with the high ratings, but just wondering about contest/award marketing for beer.

I would imagine that would be completely up to the shop.

I think the brewery owner or some brewery rep would have to talk about this with every bottle shop owner where he wants to advertise the recently acquired medals. It's up to the owner of the bottle shop.

Here in Mexico most beers that win an important medal change their label to make the medal acquisition known. I haven't seen flyers or stickers around here like that.

Normally the brewery would provide its distributors with the shelf talkers they would like to put with their beer. The distributor would then give them to the stores or offer to put them up for them (especially if the store is big enough and the distributor does the stocking of the shelves) but obviously the final say is with the store owner. So for a brewery that is small enough that it self distributes, it would be up to them to make the signs/stickers and provide them directly to the store. And I have actually seen some local breweries that have won awards with in store advertising that says it.

I would love to post a pic of what we do in our store but it seems that just inserting a pic here isn't an option sooooooo I suppose I will just tell you that we print out mini GABF medals of the corresponding color (gold/silver/bronze) and attach them to the shelf tag with the winning brew so they are easy to spot and it gives credit to the brewery

I work at a beer store and we advertised all of the GABF medal winners from NC in our store without anyone asking us to

Marketing and Sales Reps can do this during their training and sales visits.

I see the Victory and Shiner reps on occasion, as well the distributor reps out in the field.

If they are doing their job properly and the bottle shops value their visit, this should be a non issue.

Upload a pic to tinypic and post it here. I just don't think they like Meme's posted. We now have a picture of everyone's beer fridge and what they are drinking today, so get your store's shelf on here

It's up to the bottle shop owners what can and cannot be done inside a store outside stores can be subject to local rules regarding signs. I remember when I was in beer sales and I ordered some signs for customers the signs had to taken down because they violated city zoning laws.

That's awesome So just wondering, since you guys have put that award ribbon up for Pivo Pils has sales increased for that product vs. prior (do you have any data)? I know FW products generally don't move as quickly in many parts of the country because they are priced a little higher than many other 6er's on the shelves (yet we all agree they make very fine products).

It is a very common practice in North Carolina, whether done by vendor or shop owner. It truly does move more product. People want info!

It definitely has made more people grab a sixer or at the very least pick it up and take notice. We try to give personal service to everyone in the store but others prefer to shop by themselves and it helps put the bug in their ear that the beer you are looking at IS a solid decision. We tagged all the GABF winners we have and there has been a notable difference.

Even if the brewery or the rep doesn't do it I can vouch that it does make a difference.

That is the funny thing. Back when I was into wine, I had the best I could get under $10, then it moved to 12, then 15.. But I truly liked it when they had any of the wine publications scores listed on a tag, it would usually sway me to grab that bottle if it was 89 or higher. I was gobsmacked when I started getting into beer and found BA where I could not only get the ratings, but also get the written reviews(not so easy with wine).

It would be wonderful if all breweries could send out POS (point of sale) items like this to stores, it would absolutely increase sales.

I know you probably meant small breweries because some of the larger ones already do. That is, I think they do since I see displays and signs when I go beer hunting.

As long as the representations of medal winning are true and accurate, if a store owner wants to market a beer as a GABF medal winner, it could benefit both the brewer and the owner in increased sales. And by true and accurate, I mean a shelf sticker that give the year and the medal won, not just that it won a medal which could have been won 10 years ago.
