I'm going to be in New Haven for a night this Thursday and I was curious if anyone had any recommendations of places to go. I'm staying right downtown and it looks like both Prime 16 and Cask Republic will be within walking distance, but if there's another must-go place, I'd love to hear about it. I was curious if anyone had any recommendations on a beer store where I could buy some NEBCO beer. Also, is NEBCO open to the public? It's a bit tough to tell from their website what hours they're open if so.
If you're going to visit NEBCO, Amity wines is right down the road and definitely worth visiting. I believe NEBCO's hours at the very least are weekdays 9am-6pm or something like that. I also like Delaney's in Westville. They don't have great food, but their beer selection is pretty great and it has a bit more bar space than Prime 16
Next door to Cask Republic is the Wine Thief. You should find some NEBCo. goodness there. Not a huge craft selection, but a pretty decent one.If you head to the brewery, stop at Amity Wines as another BA has said already. They had a stack of Gandhi-Bot (canned on 7/30/12) as high as my waist when I was there recently.Huge selection.Delaney's beer bar is about a half mile down the street, fyi. You also should stop by Louie's Lunch in downtown new haven,"the" birth place of the hamburger.....yum.Also,right across the street from Lou's is BRU Room @ BAR....awesome,new haven style pizza and they brew their own beer.Wooster St.......home of 2 pizzerias,Sally's and Pepes....world famous and literally some of the best pizza on the planet,is less than a mile from where you will be staying.Hope this helps. Cheers and Enjoy
If you are going to stop by NEBCO, I would call first. Occassionally, they are not there during their posted hours and it sucks to drive out there to find a dark brewery.
I traveled to New Haven frequently for 2+ years, and Prime 16 was my go to. Delaney's is good too, worth hitting them up especially if you are visiting NEBCO (you'll drive past it)
hoping to fill a growler or two at the brewery on Saturday...anyone been recently? any bottles for sale at the source?
No bottles avail. at the brewery. Check Amity wines a hop, skip, and a jump down the street from the brewery. Cheers
Last Saturday they had Friars Quad, Sea Hag and Gandhi Bot for fills, but the Bot kicked while I was there. May want to call ahead to see whats on. And as Smutty mentioned before, Amity is the place to go for bottles/cans. It's less than a 1/2 mile away.
Pretty much all the big names have been mentioned already, but I would add a few other solid options. Bars: Rudy's - downtown, decent draught selection that skews Belgian, with terrific frites to match. New Haven Meatball House - I haven't been yet as it just opened, but as a spinoff from Prime 16 it can't suck. The Winchester - literally across the street from NEBCO, with solid pub food and NEBCO beers on tap. Stella Blues - limited but solid tap list, often good live music. Christopher Martins - on State St., always NEBCO on tap. Pizza: If you want good beer with your amazing New Haven pie, go to Modern. The pizza holds its own next to the more famous Wooster St spots (fwiw, I'd personally rank it a bit ahead of Pepe's and just behind Sally's), and you can drink pitchers of NEBCO instead of pints of Genny Cream (Pepes), bottles of Labatt (Sally's), or the mediocre-at-best brewpub offerings at BAR. The last time I went they had Fuzzy Baby Ducks, but I'm sure it's long gone. Enjoy your visit!
I'll chime in for another vote on Prime 16. Their burgers are worth a visit themselves...oh & BTW they have a fantastic selection of beers (good Happy Hour pricing too) .
i'll chime in with a vote for Prime but i gotta say that although Prime 16 is my spot Cask Republic has had a better line-up as of recently nevermind the 30 extra lines, but theyre both great craft beer bars
Want to just add that New Haven has a lot of good pizza, as mentioned above. Another option (which is close by to Prime) is Kitchen Zinc. Kinda hidden, but really great pizza with a small but decent tap list
Thank you guys for all of the recommendations. I wasn't in New Haven as long as I had expected (we got into town about 2-3 hours later than I had hoped) and only had time to go to one place for dinner/drinks, so I went with Prime 16 and it was great! Burgers were awesome, and they had Gandhi Bot on tap, so I had a couple of glasses of that. Also had the Southampton Double Wit for the first time and really enjoyed that beer a lot.
