I love, love, love a good doppelbock, and even though they're brewed in the spring for Lent, we're finally getting into the season when I crave them something fierce. Of course, Ayinger's is the stalwart - the epitome of the style - but Capital's Autumnal Fire and Metropolitan's Generator are both amazing, so much so I can never really decide which is my favorite. Perhaps a side-by-side is in order...

The latest batch of Starr Hill Snowblind Doppelbock was very good. Had one over the weekend. A touch more hops shining through than you would normally find in the style, but that was perfectly fine with me. 6 pack worthy no doubt.

Doppelbocks are one of my favorite styles, as well as Eisbocks. Ive had the Korbinian, Salvator, and Kulmbacher's Eisbock so far.

If you like the darkier, roastier take on doppelbocks ala Celebrator and Korbinian, don't forget about Optimator (particularly now that Spaten has simplified the bottle dating).

I am quite happy with American breweries leaving doppelbock alone for fear of ending up with an Imperial Hoppybock. Apologies to any American breweries that tackle this wonderful beer true to style. Troegs comes to mind.

LTM Les Trois Mousquetaires Dopplebock Grand Cuvee is pretty amazing. Someone above had mentioned Uf Da from New Glarus, that was a bock, not a dopplebock, but still an awesome beer. Los Gatos Brewing Company used to brew an AMAZING dopplebock, but since their founding brewer Jeff Alexander left it was never the same.

Another good American version is Gordon Biersch's Winterbock (also available at Trader Joe's as Josephsbrau Winter Brew).

I only wish I could find fresh Optimator around me. Heck, I wish I could find fresh Spaten labels of any kind these days!

I've tasted Celebrator and Salvator Dopplebock, both are very enjoyable. I don't know but I don't see dopplebocks in bars or restaurants.

I've said it once and I'll say it again. I think Andechs makes the perfect dopplebock. Don't get too excited. It's pretty simple. But it is pure. It is the essence of what I believe the style should be. I'd take it over Korbinian, Celebrator, or others.

Flying Dog makes a good dopplebock.

All 3 of those are terrific, for my money I'd buy thusly Vitus, Korbinian then Celebrator. Celebrator @ least comes in 4 packs.

All listed here are solid, very under rated style. But I think malt takes a backseat to the hop...or so it seems.
Troegenator is the most readily available near me on the American craft side of the fence. Honestly I wish I could find Bell's Consecrator as easily, only had a couple of times as it flies way under the radar.

Celebrator's one of my top-ranked beers, too, and this thread's inspired me to revisit Victory and Troegs'. Wanted to mention I tried Odin's Tipple the other day, which is billed as a Dark Norse Ale. Reminded me very much of a Celebrator crossed with a roasty stout. It's not a doppelbock, but fans of the style might enjoy it.
