Earlier today I purchased some The Barrel Trolley Brewing IPA.Let me tell you this stuff is BITTER! I love IPA's have drank many of them, this is the first time perceiving one to be bitter. This is not a pleasant bitterness,it is harsh and hardly enjoyable. I do like my IPA's big and bold, but there's just nothing right about how this beer does "hoppy".There's a total lack of pleasant hop aromas and flavors such as grapefruit and pine, just a very astringent bitterness, likely worthy of a drainpour!Sadly enough.

Most recently I've enjoyed N.B. Ranger IPA,G.F. West Coast IPA,Alesmith IPA and D.F.H 60 min,all fantastic minus the 60 min. which is just good. This beer is brewed by World Brews Rochester N.Y.,it was $7.99 for a six pack. It features Amarillo and Simcoe hops, both of which I've had before and liked. I must say I am becoming increasingly wary of bargain priced IPA's,anything less than 8.99 is hardly ever good.

I just curious as to how a brewer can get an IPA so wrong? What is to blame for this harsh bitterness? How can a brewer think this is an acceptable rendition of an IPA? Really what could have went wrong in this beers crafting/brewing process?

    A little feeback please?

Sounds like a traditional ipa... British style.

probably was too old. or, just not very good.

i want high perceived bitterness, but it will be out of balance if that's all there is.

all that said, you can just post reviews instead of making threads like this.

A traditional IPA (such as went to India during the RAJ) would have been indeed very dry and astringent with little hop aroma but lots of bitterness. Also they would have been some Brett. In addition they would have been well matured by time and heat.
Of course they used the hops available at the time!
Modern interpretations ignore all the attributes except the extra hops

How does posting a review get answers to my questions?

if you think the emboldened parts are serious questions and not "a review," you're kidding yourself.

as for the others, lack of balance, being too old (hop oils deteriorating and losing some of the flavor/aroma that should be working in harmony with the bitterness).

the bitterness comes from hop resins from early-boil hops. obviously, for your taste, this beer has too much hop bitterness. could also have been something you ate earlier interacting with the beer.

I am actually familiar with the style unlike a lot of BA's, astringency was what popped into my head by the OP's description. I looked at the one review of the beer and the reviewer described a metallic taste, which doesn't belong in any IPA.

I love hoppy beers, but hoppiness alone is (usually) not enough. It needs to be balanced with a strong flavor.

That said, I'm curious to try this, but I'm in Minnesota and I don't think Barrel Trolley can be found here. I do have friends on the east coast so maybe I'll make an excuse to go visit one and see if I can't track this down. However, I do enjoy West Coast IPA, and New Belgium Ranger happens to be one of my favorite pales - I'm drinking one right this moment, in fact.

I recently spent 10 days in Cali, mostly in San Diego,IPA heaven! I still don't see what moving to the west coast has to do with my post and said beer.

Nothing, but them West Coasters like to flaunt some superiority complex. I have had great IPA's from both coasts plus the center of the country as well as not so good ones from each area.

Nothin but amazing fruity IPAs all day long. You'll never have to deal with settling for a bitter-bomb again. Now do you see?

Flaunting nothing. It was meant to be tongue in cheek but every time I try to post something funny on this site I end up with another month long suspension. I'm starting to think Roger Goodell is a bro

Perhaps what you think as a funny remark about beer isn't seen as either funny or about beer?

Perhaps my remarks are extremely funny as well as about beer and those who have the power have no sense of humor. We'll never know the truth.(Sarcasm Alert!!!!!)

Seriously though, I agree that sarcasm and other tones of communication are really not translated well through script at all. I couldn't care less though. When the stuff I post makes me laugh, that's good enough for me.

Oh yeah.... Beer is good, right guys? <--- See? I referenced beer in this post.

I like very bitter beers, but they do need some other elements, and can be way too bitter even for me. I've tasted some IPA that are like drinking aspirin taste. I'll make sure not to get Barrel Trolley if it shows around here. Thanks for the heads up.

Did you get a chance to try the Ruination Tenth? My first thought was it had an aspirin bitterness when I tried it. That was right out of the fridge, but it improved as it warmed a bit.
