What's happening NBS players? Rainy, wet, and dreary here on the island. Perfect for sitting inside, watching football, and drinking beers all day. Jets looked asleep in the first half and I'm hoping they can somehow pull out a victory but it's not looking to good. I'm also looking forward to picking up on the walking dead tonight too.

My new beer today is New York Oyster Stout, from Bluepoint brewing. A fairly new bottled offering from them with a bottle date of 10/8/15.

The pour is a typical black color with a quick tan head. On the nose I get subtle tones of malt and coco. The drinking starts out dry and malty with a creamy smooth finish. Definite tones of chocolate and coco carry right over from the nose. Pretty tasty for the 5.5% and the mouth feel is pretty light/moderate with a very oat/malt texture to it. The chocolate tones really dominate the brew and I'm really not getting that salty, briny flavor that I do enjoy with good oyster stouts.

Overall, this is a pretty average session stout. It really disappointed me on the oyster quality and there are plenty of better options, even locally (greenport harbor) that are far better. I'm in the low 3's.

So finally getting around to a NB, and I chose this Lights Out Holiday Ale from Blue Mountain

Looks nice enough with a deep copper color, clear and off white foamy head with moderate but slightly wet lacing.

Not much nose, just some funky, mealy maltiness and a hint of what I can best explain as a noble hop type bitterness, little else.

Tastes just uninspired or something. Maybe some caramel sweetness maltiness with that bitter edge but with it comes a touch of saccharin and that mealiness in full force.

Finish is slightly dry, something left on the tongue.

This beer is disappointing. I shall call it "Redskins".

I'll confess that I'm looking forward to a very selfish and vain triumph today which is hitting 10K likes here on BA. My only desire is that it comes via one of you NBSers, as I feel a certain familyhood with all of yas.

Good afternoon, BAs! My new beer this week is an offering from one of my favorite Southern breweries, and one of the few in Mississippi, Southern Prohibition Brewing. SPB has put out some great stuff lately. I love their dank pale ales and piney IPAs. I finally had the chance to try their 2nd anniversary ale, a Belgian Quad called Lazarus:

Plus, it was a great excuse to break in my new Embrace the Funk tulip!

Rich dark caramel color. A moderately vigorous pour coaxed out a decent-sized layer of light tan foam that kept me company and left some nice tracks behind. The nose featured the yeast more than I've noticed in other Belgians. Nice bready, yeasty aromas. Also lots of plum, cherry, and caramel. Huge flavors with the first taste: plum, chocolate, caramel, cherry, raisin, pumpernickel, and toffee. I also noticed some coffee as it warmed. The feel was medium-bodied, with medium carbonation and a nice warming at the end. This is dangerously good. Cheers, BAs!

Later entry today as we just got finished putting up Christmas lights and Sweet Baby Jesus did we run into troubles we've never had before. I usually like to have a beer before starting on things like that, maybe that would have helped. Instead I'm very much enjoying one afterwards and even though DuClaw has been in Ohio a few months now this is the first time I'm trying one of their beers
    [IMG]
I don't know why this is only rated as an 85 overall. All of the flavors they say are there are there- PB, chocolate & malt. It smells fantastic, the taste is a bit bitter & I like local Willoughby Brewery's take on the same style a bit better but I wouldn't hesitate to get this again.
    Cheers!

Dude you went and bought a milk stout.. what are you doing... but it's from The Bruery though!! so it cancels everything out.

Now back with a $350 bill from Wholepaycheck and a ton of food that barely fits in my fridge... but I am knocking that fridge down by DRINKING MORE BEER! So I made room for the Pelligrino by drinking and taking out THIS...

    8 Maids-A-Milking - The Bruery

The Bruery - 8 Maids A Milking by imbibehour, on Flickr

Poured from the bottle into a Bruery tulip/snifter glass.

Poured straight down the center, the head forms evenly with excellent creamy appearances. Makes no trouble easily forming three to more solid head fingers of a thick tan and espresso colored whipped top. The body color is very dark, brown dark walnut almost purple like a real dark eggplant. Settles easily but the head sticks and goes down like a slow elevator leaving a big crown. Real nice looking beer.

Moderate notes of chocolate, slight sweet cream, a bit of cocoa powder on the nose as well. There's an interesting spicy candy note to this, makes me wonder if that's the Belgian character trying to poke itself out somehow, but it comes out more like cinnamon bark. A very different aroma than your typical milk stout.

Palate is quite unexpected. Classic winter warmer spices with a cherry tangy fruit. Surprising tartness with classic levels of winter warmer like nutmeg and cinnamon. A good interesting mix of roast character hinting on the finish, slight porter like char coming on the finish to go with the brew. Sweetness seems to be dialed in slowly and is mostly in the finish complimenting former red berried like sourness that comes before it. Chocolate angle seems to have taken a back seat to more fruitier and spicier tones than that is hinted on the palate. A solid mouthfeel supports and coats with a bit of light texture not really hinting of a larger beer.

A neat take on a milker. Definitely not what I was expecting, in many ways, and a solid classic Christmas and Bruery release.

    look: 4.5 | smell: 4 | taste: 4 | feel: 4 | overall: 4

    --------------------------------

I always dig dem seasonal Bruery beers... unless it's a Belgian Dark for me pickiness. Also when are we imperializing all the other remaining beer styles out there? Time for an imperial Keller I bet is coming next

It is an orange copper color with a frothy cream colored head. It disappeared pretty quick, but left a film on top.

Smells very, very citrusy. Spicey/spritzy. Like a sparkling soda water with pineapple and mango. There is dank/musty hops and sweet malts too.

It tates much the same. Very crisp. Kind of like a chunk of pineapple that had been sitting in the fridge for a couple of weeks. Also some mango, pear juice, and a touch of sour strawberry. There is a hint of herbal essence, and finishes with some bitterness and pine resin. A nice malt presence throughout.

The texture is very nice. Smooth, medium body with a creamy feel. Maybe a bit too carbonated, but honestly it may be the spiceyness from the flavors.

A very interesting brew. I think the green bitterness at the end takes away from/ doesn't jive with the fruityness the best, but still very good.

New BA Russian Imperial Stout Sunday (week 561)

Greetings fellow NBSers from on the ridge in Mid Hud Val NY. Crazy day at work, par for the course lately, and made it to Newburgh to pick these up that they had kindly held for me, even though I couldn't make the release yday. Cheers to the cranking staff at Newburgh.

Will add this to the database later, gonna do a review of it as I enjoy it now with y'all. Regular Conspiracy is an 11% beer but this baby clocks in at 13%.

It pours a pure opaque black, not that super dark brown of some stouts, this is pure soot black. A few bubbles on top that fade quickly to an almost bare cap. A swirl leaves oily legs that only grudgingly crawl down the glass to rejoin the rest of the beer below.

Woooaaaaaah. Man gonna take some careful sniffing to break down the scents of this outstandingly delicious aroma. Burnt caramel, whiskey, vanilla, bitter chocolate, espresso, even some floral going on. As I sip I catch oaky notes in the bouquet that smell like when you cut aged oak wood.

The taste is beyond magnificent. Whiskey balances brilliantly with darkest caramel, rich chocolate, and coffee, and just the perfect amount of hop herbal bitter closes the deal. As it opens more of the roasty notes come to the fore, nice roasty bitter that never gets acrid, and just gives a complexity that turns this to a delectable treat.

It is light though thick. How this could be I don't know, but there it is. It clings to palate with comfortable familiarity yet drinks easy with no hint of cloy or alcohol to spoil it. Dangerously drinkable, friends. Very low carb., in fact, almost still, not surprising considering the ABV, but it works extremely well, the lack of carbonic bite leaves it possessing a smoothness that is beyond enjoyable.

It drinks better than all the "big boys". Amazing beer, highest recommendation, though it is unlikely you will see any of this baby. If you do, enjoy!

I wasn't one of those obnoxious folks who counted their shows, but I probably saw about 150 or so in the 80's. This was one of my favorites, and this version of Brown Eyed Women one of the sweetest they did.

Hope you also have a Great American Beer in your glass. Cheers!

Watching some basketball. This is similar to the coffee.

A dark brown color with a 1.5 finger tan head. Fades into a collar and leaves blotches of lacing on the glass. Aroma is vanilla bean and roasted malt along with hints of toffee and bread. Flavor is pleasant vanilla with some nutty, toffee, and bread. Feel is lighter as expected for this style with a softer carbonation. The coffee notes went will with this style.

Time for something a little spiffier after that unfortunate last one. We're going with The Milkman from Hardywood

Looks nice, big thick chocolate head on top this opaque blackness along with the heavy lacing.

Nose is a big chocolate punch with hints of molasses, fig and black cherry in near equal amounts.

Tastes massive as well. It's got chocolate, molasses and old fashioned licorice on the finish.

Mouthfeel is almost chewy before it fades off, leaving a ton of sweetness on the tongue.

Great beer, but this big bottle will be something of a chore.

Good afternoon my fellow NBSer's. The weather here in north Jersey is typical fall Jersey weather, chilly but pretty comfy - I love this time of year. I'm about to pop a bottle of Kane's 1460 but for now I want to talk about my night last night. I was able to procure 2 brews that I've been after quite awhile. I'm a big fan of VT Brews and the one that I have been after and missed out on numerous times was HF Abner. I took a 40 minutes ride last week and missed out by a few hours as the keg kicked that day. I made up my mind I wasn't going to miss out again. One of my fave brew houses posted they just tapped one and thankfully I got there yesterday and was not disappointed at all. One of the many VT brews that lived up to the hype. Truly a fantastic brew. Nice color and aroma followed by wonderful flavor throughout. Nice hop hit like a great VT IPA and flavor that never ends. Good stuff. I must say however I was very surprised by another brew. While at the brewhouse enjoying the Abner the owner go's over and wipes away one line and writes in " Grimm Tesseract " - I've only had one beer by Grimm - Pulse Wave - and it was amazing. I've also heard very good things from others as well so I gave it try. I'm very surprised to say this but the brew from Grimm was better than Abner and by a long shot. It was one of the best brews I've ever had. OMG What a flavorful brew. Just awesome, amazing hop hit up front and so fruity - the mouth feel and taste was in the league with Heady and Fiddlehead. Truly un expected and I was blown away. Congrats to Grimm. Well done. Cheers

Greetings NBSer's and a New Bourbon Oatmeal Cream Stout Sunday,
And I hope this finds you all fit and fine. Beginnings of winter here with some snow on the ground and icy roads in town. It should leave in the next few days, but no denying winter now. Emotionally I'm still adjusting. The older I get the more I realize how much energy it takes to prepare and then get through the winters here. It really is a bit of a chore.

A nice early winter beer today. I pick at it here and there for feel and general sense of smallness, but it's an interesting style with which to do bourbon and overall it's pulled off in an enjoyable manner.

Hey @cavedave . I hear what you're saying. I went to about 30+ shows. Sadly mine were all west coast (and Vegas). But this is a beautiful Brown Eyed Women. Thanks for sharing. I've been on a DEAD kick today. My niece muled (er, uh, transported) a few big Bruery beers to my beloved Bavarian Dead Head brother. She just met him in a Munich hotel this morning, handing over a care package of Dead lyrics books, View from the Vault IV, Crimson, White & Indigo, & some tie dyes I picked up in Oregon along with other goodies.
It's been a damn good day, and your post made it even better!!!

Good Afternoon NBS friends. Thank you Maria for your early riser opener this am. It's like coffee on Sundays got a get little bit to get the day started right. Always enjoyable.
Well I've been absent for a few weeks but ive been checking you all out and enjoying all your posts. Providing all kinds of feedback and ideas on which direction to go when deciding on new beers to try. And we are all just like a big family - a way to spend quality time sharing ideas and inventing all kinds of fun ways to enjoy life. And beer. It's a shame some of the rest of the world cant do the same- not with beer- but with all the things that seem to tear us apart. Hell I'm no peace freak but if we stay the course right now we are going to dig a whole too deep for our children to dig out of. OK ENOUGH! Let's h
ave some fun. Today's beer is my first from a brewery I've been anxious to try and I style I'm really taking more of a liking too: PARADOX SKULLY BARREL no. 29 Sour red Ale brewed with tamarind and lime peel and aged in oak wine barrels.

Pours a cloudy burnished gold color. Cider like in its appearance with no head and no lacing as expected with a sour.
There are some columns of bubbles but they quickly disappear.

Smell is wine-like from the barrel. There is the citric aspect and a green apple fruitiness along with dried fruits and a toasty oakiness. There is also an wonderful aroma of fresh cut flowers and hay. And the Brett peeks in with a barnyard funkiness.
    Really a pleasant smelling brew

Flavor follows with a winey mouthful of decadent sourness: crisp green apple, peach and apricot, lime zest, citric acid and nice barnyard brett funk with a touch of toasty oak, white pepper spiceyness. The tamarind leaves a full flavored meatiness but also a bitterness that reminds me of chewing on a fresh picked nasturtium flower and is not unpleasant. The finish is lengthy and full and downright delicious .

Feel is tart to crisp and mildly carbonated. Very dry.

Well I'm happy to be back on the sour wagon. PARADOX is on my list now of "cant wait to try another" .
If I'm not mistaken they do only sours and the boldness of adding a fruit like tamarind is a sign of not being afraid to go out of the box. I'm on board with that. Looking forward to trying another SKULLY BARREL!

And it's back to NOVS (New Old Vinyl Sunday). Staying with my prologue theme and putting a humorous spin on it:
R.E.M -its the end of the world as we know it (and I feel fine)
Hey have a great Sunday and week and as always - Thank you for taking the time to listen![IMG] [IMG] [IMG] [IMG]

We're pretty much dug out from the snowstorm earlier this week, 50 degrees and it's a sunny, not a cloud in the deep blue sky kind of day here in CO. Took the pups out for a walk, now settling in for a nice new beer: Stone 08.08.08 Encore Vertical Epic - nice stuff.

Golden yellow color. Nice one finger head with good retention and lacing. Aroma was a bit muted, with some light yeasty smells and a bit of light citrus fruity notes. Taste was big on the fruity, estery Belgian yeast flavor, with a bit of malty sweetness - just what I like in a Belgian Style Ale. The mouthfeel was medium bodied with good carbonation and a fairly dry finish. Overall, just another good product from Stone, but what I've come to expect from them.

Finally finished refurbishing these old lamps I got about 20 years ago in Germany. They were rusted, corroded, and the light fixtures were broken or missing. They've been sitting in my garage for the last 15 years, finally about a month ago, I tore into them...here's the results:
