Even better, as the Deschutes Barrel-Aged Dickel Dopple Dinkle Bock.

I really like the style. Really love the German classics. Also I have found that Sly Fox makes some amazing versions of the style at their taprooms.

Hofbrau has a Winter Spezial out right now which I would classify as a Dobblebock. 8.4 ABV. Dark brown in color and the taste is malty and toasty. Very nice offering. I am think about picking up a couple more cases.

Funny -- they had a Winter Spezial a few years ago that was completely different -- but very good. I'll have to look for this new one, where have you seen it in WI? Anywhere near Kenosha?

I haven't tasted a lot of beers from this style, but I do like Wasatch's Doppelbock, thought!

Optimator is hard to beat. One of the best. Ayinger puts out a fantastic one as well, but as for the lack of love, unsure, I have noticed it as well. Perhaps more malt accentuated while we are seemingly never ending overdosing on hops.

Yes they did, and in fact have done it and been rewarded with excellent flavor and delicious subtle nuances.
Would love to have it again.

    Cheers

I revisited this style last month. I haven't seen this beer mentioned yet but one of my favorites was Afternoon Delight by Sun King. Lots of people have mentioned Wolfgang. I live in Denver but haven't had it yet so I'll have to keep an eye out for it.

Um -- dude? No HB Winter Spezial at the Kenosha Woodman's. In fact, the HB distro was there and he told the store beer guy that he didn't know of anything new from HB. Just where did you find this beer? :slight_frown:

Whenever Instigator Doppelbock is on tap at the Sly Fox brewpub I always order it; it is indeed a tasty Doppelbock!!

    Cheers!

No love for doppelbocks because the average American craft beer drinker is stupid. I was when I first got the craft beer bug; I think most of us did. If you are reading this, don't get too butthurt, just think about it which, I know, is hard to do when someone has just insulted you.

Gimmicks in the form of labeling, "rarity" of a beer, variants and barrel aging are used to bump sales. The craft drinkers who help perpetuate the hype train chase these beers regardless of if they are really good or not. What is "sexy" about a doppelbock? It possesses none of the general gimmicks that make a beer popular.

Doppelbocks get no love because the majority of craft drinkers today want the new, sexy, uber rare beer rather than beer that is quality.

That said, there are a few local Indy breweries doing a doppelbock. Flat 12's Deflator doppelbock (poking fun at Brady and the Patriots). Bier Brewery did Hator dopplebock. Chillywater did a BA dopplebock, Sun King did a one off. Oh, and 3WiseMen won a bronze at the 2015 GABF for Hot for Teacher, Ms. Dopplebock.

Oxnbrau from Urban Chestnut in STL is a nice one too.

While doppelbock is a great style, especially when done right, I just think gimmicks play too big a part in current craft beer culture for this style to get the love it should.

    Cheers and drink a doppelbock!

Woodman's Menononee Falls--I bought another case today. I should have been more specific with the 1st post. They have about 5 cases left.

You left out "bushels of hops", which seems to be the single largest factor in doppelbock dislike and/or disregard, at least on here. Most people on the forums who cite it as one of their least favorite styles feel that every single one they have ever had is cloying or sickeningly sweet - even the Andechser, which to me borders on maibock territory. There's little to no built-in word of mouth marketing for that style of beer, and it doesn't get the instant ratings boost that hoppy beer tends to get.

Slap on the fact that lagering a doppelbock correctly takes a minimum of 6 weeks (we'll see if those newfangled yeasts drop that time frame without also dropping quality), which is a span of time in which two or three entire batches of an IPA could be cranked out start to finish, and I'm both incredulous and thankful that any brewer in the US makes them at all.

What is it about the Andechser Doppelbock that makes you think it's close to a Maibock? I know everyone has different taste buds, etc., but this statement struck me as a bit odd (and yes, I am aware that you're super-sensitive to hops )

Andechser Doppel is so far from any usual Maibock -- it even says Dunkel right in its title. I know it finishes dry, not "sickeningly sweet," as UC points out from others' reviews, but it's still got that dark bread crust character so synonymous with a Doppelbock.

Really? I actually think Doppelbocks, of all the German styles, are probably more suited to being adopted by craft nerds than other styles (like Munich helles, weizens, etc.) They're bigger, stronger, and bolder than most German styles. If your contention is that US craft nerds only want extreme flavors, then, of the German styles, doppelbock is actually a decent fit. You like barleywines or stouts? I'd say there's a good chance you'll like a wellmade doppelbock.

Your argument is well and good for those other styles - Helles, kolsch, etc. - but I actually think it's not especially apropos here.
