I traded a Kate '12 and Darkness '11 for CR b2. I thought it was fair.

At the risk of sounding judgmental, I looked at your ISOs and can specify your mistake quite easily, because it's a very common one. Namely, you go to the store and buy lots and lots of beer off the shelf but it's in a very pell mell manner as you try to build something resembling a deep cellar. It's alright, though, because a lot of us have done it. (I bought 9 bottles of Vlad the Imp Aler in 2010, and by the time I was done trading them, I had 9 left over.) But if owning a lot of beer is like buying a lottery ticket to strike it reach, you need to play the odds better. You still have to cultivate your collection, and by cultivating it, increase the possibility of someone finding something desirable. Otherwise you're just hoping for that 1 person out of 300,000 who's willing to trade down just to be generous. It's not impossible, but highly improbable.

So, the problem is not that people are being unreasonable, but that your offer is another one of the posts which take on the form: ISO: 1800 bottle release, FT: Off the shelf stuff from my area/local beer I've overvalued. Solve that, and I bet you, and the rest of your new trader compatriots, will have a lot better luck finding takers. If you're in a beer 'poor' area, just drink your locals and be happy with them without wondering what's on the other side of the fence in the green pasture.

what's so condescending about it? he clearly gave a description of the status quo. he did not endorse it nor did he resort to name calling.

I think Luke is just being brutally honest. I wouldn't trade my CRs for any of the beers listed at the beginning of this thread except maybe for LP Gueuze (and only because I can't order that one on demand from Etre or BiaB) or Baller (but, we had a Baller show up at our tasting group recently, so maybe not). OTOH, I did trade a CR for a couple Allagash Coolships. I.e., other highly-regarded, very-limited-release, brewery-only beers.

Now, for all I know, KBS, Abyss, and Parabola might all be better beers. But, I think we all know that's not how this game is played.

I agree wholeheartedly with kscaledelf and writerljberg.

    The game is the game.

It wasn't intended to be anything of the sort. I was trying to help him correct his mistake because it's clear he wants a CR but doesn't know quite what to do about it. Patting him on the back won't do him any good.

To the rest of you, thanks.

Maybe this guy telling me that Choc Rain is out of my league and I should just be happy drinking my overvalued locals??? I have traded for plenty of great and rare beers with my trade ammo, so don't tell me to just be happy with what I have. I am not just buying random bottles on spec to trade out. With some stuff I accidentally traded beers I meant to keep for myself! I am not sure what you are talking about "cultivate your collection". Its beer its for drinking, or for trading then drink the beer you got. I am pretty sure RS is only 1300 members so your 1 out of 300,000 analogy just sounds ignorant.

The bottles I have offered in the past are not simply off the shelf locals. Maybe they were put on the shelf one day, but by the next day they were gone. I don't see any reason it is completly crazy that an 3900 bottle release cant be done for a combination of 1200-2000 bottle releases.

My main issue with RS people is I am sure there were a lot of people that joined thinking that they were gonna be able to build an amazing cellar with every new bottle release. The Bruery is more committed to making a lot of great beer than caring about a limited bottle count and a beers trade value. So far this year Chocolate Rain is the only bottle to be traded so highly so everyone is holding it for ransom and only demanding top rarity in return. Grey Monday will be even worse, but no worries as I will not even try to obtain that.

I missed a couple of those when I glanced at his cellar, probably because they're buried in a long list of locals. Which further clarifies something else: Don't ask people to look through a cellar and ask what it'll take. Be specific. (I tend to assume that the really nice stuff in people's cellars are usually not for trade, anyway. Because that's usually the case.)

I've never asked some one to pick through my cellar and pick beers they want to trade. All my offers are clear and have bottles that I want and bottles that I want to trade. I am not sure why you keep accusing me of being a stupid trader that doesn't know how this works!

No, people aren't trading them because the beer is delicious and they want to drink it. At least, that's why I'm not trading any (except the one that went to a regular who really wanted a bottle).

I really don't understand why every time some beer is hard to acquire people automatically start assuming that people are holding it ransom. Most of the time the people who got it just want to drink it!

This is a pretty vague ISO:FT

    http://beeradvocate.com/community/threads/iso-chocolate-rain-ft-be-gentle.22618/#post-275255

You did offer a Beat+ but as an edit. I would think a CR would take about Beat x3 (I have traded BT for Beat x2 twice)

I don't think writerLJ was taking a stab at you, just pointing out some tips. He even stated he went through the same progress as a new trader.

Also, I don't think CR b2 is trading for top rarity at all. In fact I have been surprised with some of the things it has gone for. Others in this thread have indicated what they gave/got in exchange.

Frankly, I don't think many people look at most posts of the form "ISO: Something, FT: List". You need to be a bit more specific, and put some hook in your subject line to get people to open it up.
