Over/Underrated Beers of 2015

My thoughts exactly. Plus the little corked/caged bottle is über cool.

 

underrated: backwoods bastard
overrated: abraxas

 

Overrated-
'15 KBS (somethings different there)
Imperial Biscotti Break (a sweet mess)

Underrated-
Redankulous-a damn good beer
Bells 30th-marketed heavy but not enough for what you get.

 

Completely agree with you on MD. Excellent beer, but not in the top 5 stouts I had this year and certainly not worth what it took to acquire, IMO of course. We shared it side by side with Good Morning, and 10 out of 11 of us preferred GM. I also would put MD behind FO, Summation, Assassin, KBBS, and Kyoto Sump, just off the top of my head. Granted it's probably the best non-BA stout I've had, but just not worth what it trades for IMO.

 

Don't know if it's overrated but Stone 2.0 was disappointing IMO. Underrated or under the radar, Freestate's Yakimaniac.

 

Overrated: Julius, Grapefruit & Habanero Sculpin
Underrated: Yellow Rose, Xocoveza - although I don't think that will last long

 

Overrated:
Zombie Dust--manage to get some about every year and this year had to ask why I bothered--good but well--there is easily available every bit as good.
Grapefruit Sculpin--good but nothing to go out of way for.

Underrated:
Westbrook One Claw Rye
Founders Red's Rye--fresh just glorious

 

Overrated:
Ballast Point Grapefruit Sculpin (good, but $14.99!?)
Founder's Breakfast Stout (I'd reach for a Samual Smith's Oatmeal Stout every time)
Nearly every chile/spice/coffee stout
North Coast Old Rasputin XIV Anniversary
Dogfish Head Miles' Davis Bitches Brew
Jester King (Everything has the same funk)

Underrated:
Sierra Nevada Hoptimum
Avery Demons of Ale (They need to age 3-5 years)
Lone Pint Yellow Rose

NOT Overrated:
The Bruery Black Tuesday
Firestone Walker Parabola
Goose Island Bourbon County Vanilla Rye
Russian River Pliney the Elder

 

Overrated: Sixpoint everything

Underrated:
Schlafly Tasmanian IPA!

 

Best IPA I've had all year was Stone's Thunderstruck; all those citrusy tropical flavors with such a bright and breezy construction.

 

Agree with everything you mention + I went on a mighty sour kick this year so stouts really had to blow me away.

 

Yep. I forgot that one. Very underrated

 

Overrated:

Had 2015 BCBS, BCBCS, BCBRS, and BCBBW last night and my wife and I didn't like any of them. Given the hype these beers have, am I seriously the only one who doesn't like them? I feel like they're really unbalanced compared to other BBA beers I've had from FW, Deschutes, etc.

Underrated:

Deschutes Jubelale - Never had it until recently and it was a pleasant surprise!

 

It's terrible because it's just sugar and alcohol mixed together. It's not even beer. With the restrictions of this site being beer-only and this concoction's popularity I'm surprised it's still listed here.

 

Underrated:
Boulevard's The Calling
Gigantic Saboteur Porter

Over-rated:
Speedway Stout

 

Not necessarily over-rated, but certainly over-priced ---Prairie BOMB---, $10 per single vs. $12 a 4pk for FBS.

Under-rated - DuClaw Dirty Little Freak

 

Overrated - Alpine Pure Hoppiness

• I can think of 10-20 DIPA's I would rather have. For $17 (six-pack), I was pretty underwhelmed. Shoulda used the money to get another sixer of Xocoveza.

Underrated - Southern Tier Choklat/Mokah/Choklat Oranj

• My wife and I can't get enough of these imperial stouts.

 

Overrated/Underwhelmed:
FW Helldorado (Good, but lacked the complexity of their other beers IMHO)
Lord Hobo all of it (hype train went to a screeching halt)
Maine Beer Co Lunch (had it a bunch of times, and the last couple I was pretty meh on it)

Underrated/Exceeded Expectations:
Proclamation Derivative Galaxy and Mosaic (Track those down. Insanely good)
Grey Sail Pour Judgement (Reviews are solid, but it was amazing on tap and in the can)
Grimm their Dry Hopped Sours (SOO GOOD)
Mayflower Standish Imperial Stout (Excellent non BA Imperial Stout)

 

Overrated: Bourbon County Coffee

Underrated: Pear Bear
