Over/Underrated Beers of 2015

Overrated: Tree House Julius, Heady Topper, Sip of Sunshine
Underrated: Foundation Afterglow, Kern Just Outstanding IPA

 

Been seeing Barrel Thief - how is it after a few months? There's been some at my local go to place sitting on a shelf for a good three months.

 

Overrated: Lagunitas Sucks
Underrated: Yazoo Fall lager

 

i'll have another go....

over rated: odell pina agria. tasted like watered down brazzle, didn't taste hardly any pineapple and was honestly sad compared to brazzle. Another was gypsy tart from the bruery, this really let me down for a bruery bottle to be honest sorta tasted like dirty water. Next was pure hoppiness from alpine, was just one dimensional and bitter in a bad way.

under rated: mother road tower station ipa. this will put az on the map i think. The bruery's humulus terreux was great as well for a funky ipa kinda thing.

Underrated : Mayflower Alden (blind taste test I guarantee it could hang with any one MA's big boys)

• Lunch (though, I'm not certain if this can really be underrated at 4.33 and considered world class..)

• Sierra Nevada Vienna
• Harpoon IPA

 

Overrated: 2015 Dark Lord
Underrated: Destihl Brewing Lynnbrook Wild Sour Series
Laughing Dog The Dogfather imperial stout. Excellent stout for only $4.99 a bottle!!

 

Overrated:
Sculpin- mediocre IPA defined and that's before cost.

Underrated:
Iron Goat Impaler- fantastic Galaxy-hopped DIPA.

 

Overrated:
Firestone Walker Stickee Monkee (good, but it's a one-note sugar bomb)
Founders Harvest Ale (great beer for those who may not be huge wet hop ale fans - me, I want a bit more punch)
Stone Pale Ale 2.0 (bitter sex in a canoe)
Bell's 30th Anniversary Stout (lacks balance now, will probably be amazing in a year's time)
Anchorage Love Buzz (about as rustic as a city block)

Underrated:
Logsdon Seizoen Bretta (so damn rustic and complex - everything I want from a saison)
Firestone Walker Pivo Pils (best pilsner ever?!)
21st Amendment Fireside Chat (not amazing, but balanced and tasty in all the right ways)
St. Bernardus Extra 4 (such an amazing table beer, shame it's so damn pricey)
Weyerbacher Sunday Morning Stout (better than KBS!)

 

Based solely on my ratings and the rdev%:
Underrated:
-Mich Ultra at +23.9% (its not that bad people!)
-but in terms of real beer it would be: Funky Buddha Blueberry Cobbler ay + 18.8% . I will say that my rating for the Blueberry Cobbler was done on release day and it faded SUPER fast, so I am not surprised.

Overrated:
Silva Stout at a whopping -47.7%, although my bottle was almost certainly infected
Brewery Ignus Fatuus at -32.9%


Ratings aside, based off of my personal experience versus hype I would say a couple that stick out:
Underrated:
COAST Barrel Aged Blackbeerd 2015
Anderson Valley Blood Orange Gose
Westbrook Fisticuffs (fairly highly rated but seemed to come and go without any real interest from folks)
Funky Buddha No Crusts (decently rated but IMO one of the best FB beers and better than MBCP)

Overrated:
Zombie Dust (not a new to me beer but I tried it a couple more times in 2015 and still think its probably the most overrated beer I've ever had)
regular Mexican Cake (I absolutely love the Barrel Aged Mexican cakes including this years variants, but the regular MC is just kinda whatever for me)
Great Lakes Lake Erie Monster

 

Overrated - DFH Higher Math
Underrated - Anything from the brewery named - From The Barrel. Love ALL their stuff!

 

I missed out on this and am seriously regretting it

 

Underrated:
Sierra Nevada Nooner Pilsner
Bell's Third Coast Beer
Atwater D-Light Kolsch

 

Underrated:
Tired hands and wicked weed

 

Overrated:
Sixpoint 4 Beans
Lagunitas Sucks (seems to be outdated product all over the East Coast-no bottle dating)

Underrated:
Victory Saison Du Buff
Great Lakes Chillwave DIPA
Singlecut Bon Bon TNT-(This would be in the BA top ten if more widely available)

 

I am with you on Kiwi Rising -- simply sublime. But not so much the Boom Sauce. I've had three of four cans purchased and find it ... muted and underwhelming. One more to go and man, I want to love it. But my hopes have been adjusted.
