Anyone know if this is in the works now that we have a new batch or rare and subsequently a few hundred empty barrels ready for some barleywine?

For me this is a no brainer, the original King Henry is and was the best barleywine I've ever had and I really hope Goose Island is way ahead of me here and has this resting in those magnificent barrels as we speak.

Seems like a no brainer, but I'm afraid to see the cost on a bottle of it though!

At the Lincoln Park Binnys event GI said they will age barleywine in the rare barrels, but it'll be aged for two years (so 2017 release), and probably won't be called King Henry.

At the GI Clybourn event, I was told that it is possible, but a lot of the barrels are in bad shape because of their age.

Since folks talk like BCBBW is the BCBS red headed step child nobody will want this anyway right?

Unlikely. King Henry is amazing - better than BCBW or Sucaba in my opinion. And it's likely status as the one-off variant for 2016 or 2017 (or whatever year) will assure people gladly hand over their firstborn.

I'd love to foster all of those unwanted red headed step children. Send them my way (Sarah Mclachlan Arms of an Angel playing in the background).

Rare 2.0 doesn't taste like Rare 1.0. The barley they are aging in the Heaven Hill barrels won't taste like King Henry either. The temperature cycles alone over the next two years would force a different flavor profile.

The Rare 2 barrels were refilled in September of this year. If the beer is palatable, then expect to see it on sale in 2017.

OG Rare was the best beer period I've ever had along with 2009 batch 4 Temptation I had a few months ago. How does 1.0 Rare compare to 2015 release? Inquiring minds want to know...

I agree, King Henry was fantastic, and living in Chicago I can say I've had it a ton, well over 10 bottles. I even had one about 2 weeks ago.

Rare 2.0 is A LOT more charred wood and lighter on the booze (but still has the warming burn). Even a brewer at the GI Black Friday event said it's a lighter whiskey flavor that resembles Basil Hayden. It's probably the most complex BCBS they have ever made.

Fun Fact: When Heaven Hill rediscovered the barrels after 35 years, most of the spirits were evaporated. What was left wasn't palatable and they dumped all of it.

IMO BCBBW '13 was very close to King Henry (puts flamesuit on). The 2014 wasn't even close...how is this year's? YMMV. Take care now, bye-bye then.

I never said anything about King Henry. ;-P Still bitter that it alluded me upon release. Fresh 2013 BCBBW was awesome though. Love my BCBS Variants fresh, and my FW Parabolas & Sucabas with at least a year+ Then I'm willing to talk apples to apples. :-)

King Henry IS amazing, but I will say it was considerably easier to land a KH after all this time than it was to land an OG rare, or even it seems some of the variants the last few years. I got a king henry via facebook group for CD8.

Barleywine is currently in those barrels and will be released for 2016 (1 year aging) per the Goose guys I've talked to.

Speaking of this years barleywine, I thought it was the best one yet. More english barleywine and less "stouty", although I think a lot of people loved that about the barleywine

It seems like a no brained to me, I was just thinking about this tonight. They called this years special bottle rare, I see no reason why they won't call a bw aged in rare barrels King Henry again. I'm down for King henry(17)

The only reason I could think of is that I believe Greg Hall named the beer after his son. Sofie is still there because that is now one of their staples but with King Henry being a one off I could see the name changed.

That's interesting to hear that last year's was so different. I didn't find any last year (and don't really expect to find any this year either at this point); did its profile even resemble King Henry?

King Henry was actually brewed twice. First time was draft-only and aged in regular BCBS barrels. Rare was supposed to be a one-off and here they are releasing another BCBS named Rare, so I would expect a re-release of King Henry would have the same name.
