Thanks for this. I was just debating whether to make this beer my 99th tick. You've decided it for me in favor of the beer.

I haven't been to the Canals since they took over from the previous owner but thought the beer at Hops and Grapes better cared for and a more interesting selection of hard to find stuff. (Not that I'd buy anything in NJ except to drink there rather bring back here to PA....)

Good evening NBS, hope everyone is enjoying the end of the long weekend. Thanks @cavedave for getting us started today. I just got back from Ohio at my parents house for the weekend. A ended up getting 2 cases of bombers + 2 mix six packs of new beer to review. Also grabbed a few Hoppin Frog/FFF bottles I wanted to re-review from 4 years ago(This Friday of course) The amount of new IPA/APA I need to review is too damn HIGH. I made it even worse today. So I need to get going on those, some are already past the BB dating :grimacing:. Good thing I got a good handful of Belgians and imperial darker ones as well. So I am going to squeeze in 4 new beers today. And here they are:

Damn good pale ale! Fantastic appearance with lasting head retention and tons of soapy lacing clinging down the glass as you drink it. Aromas and flavors of grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, apricot, mango, melon, lemon zest, orange peel, and pine hops; with moderate honey/toasted bready malt and herbal/floral/grassy hop earthiness. Medium sized pine/grassy bitterness; very smooth finish with moderate hop stickiness and light bready creaminess from the Munich malts. Nicely dry finish from sticky bitterness; but still had a balancing amount of malt sweetness with no lingering hop astringency. Drink by date was 9/25, but I still was really impressed with this. The aromas were muted a bit, but still good. 3.94

My one and only SD beer, lucky enough to find when I was in ND a few weeks ago. This was absolutely delicious! Aromas and flavors of big dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, brown sugar, toffee, toasted dark bread, light smoke/char, and light-moderate herbal hops. Light-medium herbal hop and roasted bitterness; with a great bittersweet balanced finish with moderate creaminess and light sticky/chalkiness from the hops and roasted malts. Light-moderate dryness after the finish from both hop and roast bitterness. This seriously hit all the major points I love from an American porter. A nice complex malt bill that includes Munich malts(it was blatantly obvious with this one); while not being too overly roasty, and having a solid amount of dryness. Zero complaints! 4

Yet another from the ND trip. Milwaukee Brewing company, a Jasmine tea DIPA. Very nice stuff. Aromas and flavors of grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, lemon zest, orange peel, light pepper, pine, and herbal tea; with moderate honey/light caramel/toasty bread malts with floral/grassy hop earthiness. Moderate piney/spicy bitterness; with a very smooth finish with moderate hop stickiness and slight bready creaminess in the mouthfeel. Nice moderately dry finish with no lingering hop astringency; solid malt backbone and not overly sweet with good attenuation. Very easy drinking for 8.7%, small warming on the finish. The aromas were a bit muted; but other than that, really nothing to complain about here. The tea seemed to add a bit of spicy/herbal character, but it blended well against the Centennial/Cascade hops and wasn't overdone. Really enjoyed this. I almost always enjoy something with Centennial/Cascade as the main hops; as long as the malt side of things is done correctly for the style of course. 3.88
    [IMG]

Was fortunate enough to easily find this and the Winter Fitz bombers this weekend. This was damn good for a low ABV pumpkin ale. Aromas and flavors of big pumpkin, cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, clove, allspice, peppercorn, brown sugar, light caramel, toasted biscuit, and light-moderate herbal hop/spice earthiness. Light-moderate herbal hop/spice bitterness; with a balanced light-moderate bready creaminess and spice stickiness in the mouthfeel. Medium bodied. Very flavorful for the ABV. No complaints at all. A really complex amount of spice and pumpkin flavors with perfect balance against a bready malt backbone. 4

Cheers, have a good night NBS!

Not to worry. Most are so "in love" with the BCBS "mystique" that they'll just discount my comment as being ravings of an insane homer who doesn't understand.

Pleased to add a second beer to today's super reviews..."Cotton Pickin' Farmhouse Ale" by Haw River Farmhouse Ales, Saxapahaw, NC. An imperial IPA aged in French oak tanks ("foedres")with Brettanomyces, then dry hopped.

Amber/gold pour from 750 ml bottle, with two fingers of loose white foam; some cap retention and light lacing; decent clarity.

    Second pour:

Hoppy Citrus and a little tart funky nose.

Bitter hops and lemon zest up front; the funky tart from the Belgian yeast is an afterthought; more bitter lemon in the middle; the finish is wooden.

Highly carbonated with a dry mouthfeel; there is a citrus bite on the tip of my tongue.

Overall, this ale has a bitter hop, wooden linger; the IPA bitterness is far more prevalent than funky tartness; this mash up of IPA vs. Farmhouse goes by unanimous decision to the IPA corner...nevertheless, I enjoyed what little funk is here, and definitely would drink again as a change up from a straight up IPA. Cheers!

Possibly my last new beer for this New Beer Sunday, although I may have another beer tonight before a 9-10 detox before a quick Austin, TX trip.

This is New Holland's Dragon's Milk w/ Raspberries:

    3.56/5 rDev -8.5%
    look: 5 | smell: 3.25 | taste: 3.5 | feel: 3.75 | overall: 3.5

12 ounce bottle into a tulip.

Pours brown like molasses, at least in color, but thinner in body. Once in the glass, the body looks pitch-black and sports a coffee-with-heavy-cream froth above it. Lace streaks and a thick film stick around as the head departs. 5

Hard to detect any aroma from this beer. I have to really put some effort into sniffing this beer in a way that I'd feel ashamed to do in a bar or anywhere else public. Trying hard enough though, some faint raspberry, chocolate, and malt. Underwhelming. 3.25

Redemption comes on the palate, but in relative terms. Much more berry and it's a touch tart and sweet and tasty. The stout elements of this beer are hard to come by---no roastiness, no chocolate, no nuffin--- and more resemble Dr. Pepper in flavor. 3.5

Thin feeling and soda-like until it warms up, at which point it coats the tongue with sticky sweetness. Slightly solvent and bitter in the finish, but overall this drinks pretty nice. 3.75

The first in the series that wasn't cloyingly sweet to the point that I could actually finish this one.

    New Saison Sunday (week 562)

Late start. I too am gonna bend the rules a touch and drink a beer I haven't had in many years, one I only tasted twice, and never reviewed. Funny how taste evolves, and how expectations do as well. My memory of this beer was that it had a really barnyard and cheese funk going but it turns out it is strong earthy and vinous character that is dominant. Really fine beer it is instructive to taste, since the house yeast used is available to home brewers, but rarely yields a beer of this quality, which is a mark of the great brewing skill at Brasserie Dupont.

Hope you also have a Great Beer in your glass. Cheers!

Very tasty Quad. Excellent musical choice.

Good luck with the mouse hunt. Made me think of the schlocky 80's flick Of Unknown Origin. Hope that's not your "mouse" situation. Fun movie but you definitely need to be drinking.

I got this from seeing everyone trying this on here.

Nice black color, with a fairly thick, dark, head. It has, almost a chocolate nose to it.

Taste - Gosh, it does taste like a chocolate beer, somewhat. I do also get the coconut also. Very delicious, and a good way to end new beer Sunday.

I think I'd go with a live trap, then turn the critter loose about ten miles outside of town. And then I'd put a stuffed owl in the garage.

    Greeting NBS Friends!!!
I've been popping in on and off all day, but finally cleaning up my lesson plans for the week (with beer in hand).:sunglasses:
Thanks, as always to our benevolent hosts, specifically @cavedave this time, but as we know both he Dave and Maria are VERY appreciated here.
I've had a few days with various family members, mostly on the inlaws side. Very cool peeps, all of them. I swear life would be better with a 4 day work week (I'd like to go 3, but don't wanna sound greedy). A little more time to get the "other" things done, and yet still find time to chill, and spend a few more hours with those we care for. Anyway, I digress.

Insane Rush IPA by Bootstrap Brewing Co, Colorado.

According to the can, it's made with Rocky Mountain glacier water and "Crazy Hops."
Thanks to @nickobrewer for this Rocky Mountain gem

Pours a deep, brilliant copper meets a Sergio Leone sunset hue. A little darker and burnished in appearance for the style, but sho' is pretty. Fluffy head pops up 2+ fingers high. Recedes and laces nicely. Smell popped with the top of the can. Instant shot of orange zest, pine, floral, and hints of crackery malt beckon my smeller. Taste starts off with a mix of orange zest, grass, slight sweetness that moves toward pine and resin with a hint of pepper. FInishes piney and slight peppery spice with a slightly slick feel. Full enough mouthfeel for style.
Overall, this is a damn fine IPA. I'd love to try this one on tap.
    PS Love the label's artwork.

    Cheers All

    Greetings, fellow NBSers,

Briefly checking in from the parental palace, where I celebrated a delayed Thanksgiving and watched UW dominate the Cougars, and had no new beers today. I did have some during the week - a Wee Heavy on Tuesday http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/148/153285/?ba=woemad and an Altbier brewed in California (Lagunitas Doppel Sticky) that I was unable to review. The maltiness seemed about right but it seemed crazy hoppy for the style. I'd happily drink it again, but I'd definitely not reach for it when craving an authentic alt.

    Cheers!

Good morning my fellow NBSer's. It was a crazy busy weekend for me working black friday - saturday and sunday but hey, gotta pay the bills right. The weather was really nice here in north Jersey - esp yesterday - so the little time I did have outside work was fun. My new beer for this week is special to me as its from a local brewery that's 10 minutes from my house and has only been open less than 6 months but is already putting out some real quality brews. While at Magnify brewing a few weeks ago I tried their Saison that was aged in red wine barrels. It was quite tasty so thankfully I picked up 2 bottles to take home. Last night seemed like the perfect time to pop one with thanksgiving leftovers. It was a wonderful meal with friends and the beer was amazing. It was a 16.9oz bottle which I split into 2 pours with dinner and it was so nice. Poured a dark golden color and was so easy to drink. Went down nice and smooth. Excellent flavor throughout. Nice wine notes but every subtle. I try to support local but when they produce such fine brews it makes it easy.

What a great number of posts and sentiments! I am currently re-reading Robert Frost. Here's my last bit. Cheers all.

    The Rabbit Hunter

    Careless and still
    The hunter lurks
    With gun depressed,
    Facing alone The alder swamps
    Ghastly snow white.
And his hound works In the offing there
    Like one possessed
And yelps delight, And sings and romps,
    Bringing him on
    The shadowy hare
    For him to rend
    And deal a death
    That he nor it
    (Nor I) have wit
    to comprehend.
