Will drinking a lot of sour beers in a short time make your tastebuds/palate go useless? Like when you eat a lot of war heads. I only ask because I am going to a sour beer festival next week, and was wondering if there is any prep one can do to possibly offset this.

Keep some pretzels in your pockets!

I doubt it. Most sour beers are not that sour and they are usually balanced and buttressed by plenty of malt. I would forego the pretzels unless you can find some that are not salted, salt will affect your palate more than sour. Which is actually what is happening with the warheads effect, citrate salt (a form of citric acid) is the primary culprit.

I don’t really care for pretzels anyways, unless they’re the soft kind. Thanks for the other information though.

That's a good question. First thing, give up the War Heads. Drink some water, have a nice lager, eat a cheeseburger, and continue to indulge. Most sour beers are far more balanced than folks know. Mixing things up is my best approach.

how'd it go? for me, I find its not my tastebuds that get overwhelmed, but my stomach....drinking 1-2 sours is fine, but if you have more than that, it can really disrupt the pH in your stomach...

I'm sure that sour beers can be a challenge for certain stomachs, but it's also interesting to point out that cola is way more acidic than any beer. You don't taste it of course, because of all the sugar. Conversely, sour beers have very little sugar, which is a big factor in how sour they taste.

Agree with @Sixpoint, have had several bad experiences after having a couple sours. A few months back I had a flight with Rodenbach Grand Cru, Duchesse De Bourgogne, Odell Brazzle, and had about 5 oz of each in 45 minutes. My stomach was thrown for a loop and the acid build up got to be too much.

I used to be able to have sours no problem. Recently pretty much after one Im getting instant heartburn.

it went well! However I did get extremely nauseated about five hours after drinking. Not sure if it had anything to do with the ph, I never even considered that.

Isn't this pretty much also a question what your stomach is used to?
I drink bone dry, accidic white wines quite often and I never had any problems with digesting sour beers.

Only "sour" style that give me heartburn is gose specifically westbrooks..I still love it tho

Most wild ales I have no issues with as they lean more towards the funk which I prefer.

@Pete_IV That's a sad story my friend. I will be one sad dude the day my beloved sours makes my body feel like that.

Haven't noticed any issues with sours/stomach upset. Like the above suggestion to have a lager somewhere in the middle...

I am like this also. I love sours and limit myself to about 8 oz depending on how acidic they are. I imagine though if you can handle it your taste buds would certainly get burned out. Not as fast as your bitter perhaps but certainly there is a limit.

I actually find with sours that once I get past the initial lactic blast and my tooth enamel has sufficiently softened, the less I even detect the sourness and the more I'm able to get to the flavors lying underneath. Had a 750 of LC#4 over the weekend and though the first sip was an acid bomb (a delicious one at that), by the second glass I was tasting all the way down to the base beer.

I've never had more than 2 servings of sours in a short period of time. Let me know what it is like after so many sour samples.

Me too with the stomach thing, sadly learned it the hard way, I've been working on it and can handle about 6 samples of sour beers at a beer fest without trouble. Also find they can hurt the palate just like too many big IPA's.

Bring Tums!! I went to Sour fest at Stone which was close to 45oz of sour beer and only sour beer. Didn't feel too good after. I was the only one of the 4 in our group that didn't take tums and everyone else was fine.

I'm lucky I guess, I've been to 3-4 Sour beer only events and have never had an issue with taste buds or my stomach. Standing however... well...
