Did we ruin Bourbon County?

With no bottle shops in my rinky dink town, we miss out on pretty much everything. However, the one grocery store always gets bourbon county, and normally you could walk in and buy a 4 pack or 2 and be on your way. That changed drastically this year. Wasn't released on Friday and we had to wait until today for it. I went up on my break and was told they're only releasing on case of the singles per day and they were already gone. I said that's the dumbest thing I've heard and by them doing that with no limits the same person can go there daily in the morning and buy it all. They just shrugged their shoulders and walked away. Interesting way to do things, which really kills anyone working days. They said they only got 5 cases, so it will be once a day all week and I work all week. Not many people know, or are into the craft scene heavily around here so there's only a few people I can think of who will be there every morning grabbing 12 and leaving.

I did enjoy standing out with all the other Black Friday shoppers (Best Buy was next to Total Wine) knowing I was getting beer. Got a few odd looks, like there must have been some blowout sale on liquor.

It is the hunt. It is no different than any other hobby. People have camped for comics, sports cards, etc. I camped out for an Xbox 360 back in 2006. This is no different. You are never guaranteed anything, but as stated, its all about the hunt. That's half the fun.

No, it's a technical detail, whether is be price gouging or collusion the direct result is higher prices for consumers. The only difference is each action has their own set of procedures and requirements for evidencing the infraction within the legal system. The only difference is our perspective, I macro view whereas you take a narrow-based approach, but the final result is high prices. When trying a case, a legal team attacks from multiple fronts to elicit a particular result with varying results based on the infraction. This has been a rather long discourse so i'll agree to disagree.

Fucking Illinois Bastard. Apparently, it's a term folks from Wisconsin have been using for a long time to describe their neighbors to the south, especially when they head up for vacation, hunting season, etc, and they're on less than their best behavior. Beer-wise, a lot of the bad habits (such as the OP described doing) are common in that area, and are spreading to other parts of the country, so FIB is kinda becoming shorthand for dickish behavior.

But did you drag three family members out so you could buy 4 of them?

Waiting in line for 8 hours is hunting?

Engage in whatever makes you happy, but let's not go overboard here. You knew it was inside, you didn't sneak up on it.

no variants in MT and the town I live in had their whole shipment sent back for too high of an abv for state laws (our shipment of 13.7% should be here in a week and a half), managed to get a case delivered from a different town the day before Thanksgiving and have a buddy who nabbed me half a case to pick up at a later date too, I'm focusing on not shipping beer presently and using all methods available at my disposal

That's kinda funny actually. Sitting out in the cold for 8 hours with no reward, horrible experience. Sitting out in the cold for 8 hours so you can buy a beer, super fun experience. I guess context matters a lot!

It seems like the days where the attitude 'beer is accessible' and connotations of it being the beverage of the working man, the commoners (as opposed to the wine and spirits of the upper classes) are well and firmly behind us.

    Thank god that's over.

If I listed all the things I would rather half for $230 than a few BCBS type bottles, I would probably be banned for my unsavory thoughts!
seriously, the margin of enjoyment I get from lesser beers than BCBS doesn't equate to the kind of money and time being spent on the Bourbon County stuff.

Though I created a BeerAdvocate account a while back, this is the first year I've been active as I started to get more into the whole culture surrounding beer. Obviously, through these forums I learned of the hype surrounding BCBS.

I contemplated getting up early, waiting in line, and ultimately (I would hope) get my hands on some BCBS. Instead I decided to simply find some local bars who were offering pours or draft options. For lunch, I went to a restaurant up the road from my parents house and had a few 5.5oz pours from this year's batch. That night, I went out with some friends and we stumbled upon a bar that had 2014 BCBS on tap for $8 (10oz). It was awesome; the best part is that I was able to introduce some friends/family to quality BA beer. If I find it again this season, that's great - if not, I got to try it and will have it again next year without venturing out on Black Friday. As others have said, there are so many solid beers out there now so why deal with the extra stress? Discovering and drinking beer is supposed to be enjoyable.

No. I almost brought my wife but decided to let her sleep in. I only waited half an hour as well... I was fifth in line.

In fact, when I got home and went by my local Wegmans yesterday, they still had one Barleywine and several BCBS left in the store room. After saying I'd take the Barley, I gave it back when I found out they had one Brooklyn Black Ops left. I had spent enough on Goose Island and feel with the 12 I got, I have more than enough. More power to whoever gets that Barleywine now.

Do you think they'll still have an BA cases for sale in a month's time? I'm from GH and I'd very much like to get my hands on summadat.

If this thread is bad, go in the great lakes forum and find the Oddside thread to see the people arguing back and forth in there and how the release went.

Short story (from what I can tell, although one person said they bought some yesterday), no, it is all gone.

Thanks for all the responses. This has been a great read.

I know, I was part of the problem this year. I'm fairly certain that this was my awakening in the sense that I'm not waiting in line or paying outrageous prices anymore.

    To clear some things up:

I'm really glad I posted this, because this is exactly the conversation I wanted to see. Also, I forgot Big Bad Baptist existed and can't wait to find some again. [Insert FT/ISO jokes here.]

My family members weren't against helping me out. The real issue with this strategy (as many of you pointed out) was that they were there solely to help me get my hands on more. That's at least a little dirty. By no means, however, did it harm my relationship with them. We had some fun with it.

Which brings me to another point- many of you mentioned the fun you had and the "experience". I felt this way last year, and I believe this year I let what I didn't get ruin my experience. That's on me (again).

I find it extremely interesting that no one commented on here about stupid shit that they've done along these lines. I believe a couple people hit the nail on the head with the "tons of people have done dumb shit but they're not sharing it" sentiments. Sure, it was a confession, but I really wanted to see this conversation play out. I think there's a lot of good things to take away from it.

Lastly, I didn't mean to lump all of you into the "we". Apparently, it hit a nerve with a lot of you to be part of a collective group that has people with all different opinions on things that may or may not match yours. Sorry. You're all better than me. I'm part of the problem as I inferred in my OP. *Changes title to: "Are people like me ruining Bourbon County"*

This is a good piece and admittedly does not look good. However, it's a tricky issue to unpack.

For example, how does the sale of beer in stadiums relate back to Budweiser's sponsorship with FIFA? I honestly have no idea. Maybe if Budweiser isn't sold in stadiums, then the sponsorship deal is pulled?

It's also entirely possible that FIFA gets a cut from all stadium concessions and would not have backed off on requiring alcohol sales no matter who their sponsor was. It's not unreasonable to think they were looking out for their own bottom line, rather than their sponsor's.

But ultimately, it's hard to tell just how the implications actually play out. Worth noting:

    http://www.politifact.com/punditfac...liver-says-fifa-pressured-brazil-lifting-its/

Note: this article doesn't deny the truth of Oliver's claims, but it does point out that the "pressure" that came about was really more about getting Brazil to make good on an stipulation they had previously agreed to--enabling alcohol sales in their stadiums for the World Cup--in order to win the bid in the first place.

I have a hard time demonizing ABInBev over Brazil agreeing to allow alcohol sales in their stadiums as part of the pre-existing agreement to host the World Cup. It sounds like that is a FIFA policy, although we can certainly question whether or not it would be policy in the first place if Budweiser wasn't one of their primary sponsors...

Well, it's not really a matter of agreeing to disagree. You're conflating two things that are different. It's akin to conflating blackmail and theft on the grounds that both could result in financial injury to the victim.

But yes, I agree this has become a long discourse, and it seems to be going nowhere, so let's just drop it.

There are many beers out there that taste as good or better than the hyped beers at lower cost and no waiting that in a blind test would likely do as good or better. The last time I stood in line for a beer was on board my aircraft carrier during Desert Storm for my 2 beer allotment, along with 3000 other guys.
