Honest question, I see it mentioned a lot on here that people won't buy something local if it's mediocre, implying that other people do. I'm curious, does anyone intentionally buy local beer that isn't very good simply because it's local? I'm talking about buying something you know is just ok, not trying something and it turning out to be meh.

Well with me, I am usually buying something I haven't tried before half the time so I can't say it's mediocre until I've purchased and drank it.

However, I stick more to breweries that know what they are doing and that make good beer no matter where they are from.

That's what matters, if a local place makes lousy beer I am not buying their product plain and simple.

Hell no. And there is a LOT of mediocre local beer around here. I think most of the people buying mediocre local beer are probably not really into good beer, but they are into the "buy local" movement.

Never. I work with a ton of people who do except they dont know its mediocre. They buy it because its local.

No, I don't encourage mediocrity. Sure, I'm game to try any local beer once, but if it's not up to snuff then I'll move on.

There is a lot, and I mean A LOT, of semi-local and even very local craft beers new to the market here, but most of them suck versus brands such as Odell, FW, Deschutes, etc. I drink quality beer with my hard earned money.

I don't intentionally buy mediocre beer; sometimes it turns out that way, though.

I will not buy more than a single of any beer that I've never heard of local or not, once it is proven worthy then more can be purchased.

Define 'mediocre', and there's your answer.

I believe that many of these these places produce beer that's not so much 'mediocre', but made for a different audience; made for a more broad appeal.

ETA: I voted "I only intentionally buy good beer', but if that includes a 'mediocre' amber ale or lager in someone else's mind then so be it.

Nope, even though 90% of my purchases are still from new beers I haven't tried. The other 10% is beer that I've previously had which was good.

Never buying crap beer again just to support a mediocre brewery. Might as well support the good local breweries.

Below average. Not well made. Much better options.

There is a local brewery who only has 1 beer. That beer tastes exactly like a minimally better BMC called Indio (an american dark lager) and it's 3x the price of that BMC. I'd rather buy the BMC every day.

Ehhh. I can name at least one mediocre brewery in CT that is coasting purely on the buy local thing. Their beer is legitamtely gross. They've tried selling infected beer at a discount. They've blamed CT consumers for not supporting local craft (meanwhile plenty of good brewers can barely keep up with demand). Once a solid alternative pops up (and there's already one in the planning/building stage) pretty close to them they will be done for. I'm sure plenty of people can name at least one legitimately mediocre brewer in their state.

Ultimately comes down to this (though new stuff is probably no longer the majority of my purchases).

I am more prone to give a blind try to a local brewery than non-local one. This will lead to to plenty of mediocre beer purchases, but I didn't "know" it would be mediocre when I made my purchase (sometimes I might suspect).

I don't mind drinking mediocre beer in a brewpub setting for social and business reasons, but am unlikely to purchase it to take home, or to share.

Probably a skewed answer set considering the audience.

There are plenty of good local beers here, so no need to. Only place I patronize that I generally consider mediocre is a brewpub that is less than two miles fro me, so it's not so much about locavorism, as it is convenience, service, food and vibe.

We at Cypress Suds believe strongly in "Geauxing Leauxcal." There are enough new breweries around me so I rarely have to buy from a brewery like Abita haha. Don't get me wrong, I love me some Abita but there are breweries in LA that are kicking their ass

Oh, I bet there are a lot of poor and mediocre breweries out there- even taken on their own terms. I was just hopefully pointing out that this isn't necessarily as cut and dried as it seems. It all depends on the angle at which you view the question.

Went to a local-ish packy yesterday ... there was a bunch of local stuff and I was looking for something hoppy. All of the local hop forward beers were at least 4-8 weeks older than all of the west coast IPAs they had. So I picked up Sierra Nevada Celebration, Green Flash West Coast, & Racer 5. Old beer can be chalked up at mediocre as well IMO.

I support the hell out of good local breweries. I don't really give mediocre locals the time of day, except for singles to 'tick'.

Long story short: Union, Calvert, Ocelot and Lickinghole Creek good; Jailbreak, Tall Tales, Old Bust Head, and (usually) DuClaw, notsomuch.
