Well, several minutes ago, I had the pleasure (not really), of breaking my first glass carboy. One thing I learned, do not have super hot water in the carboy while trying to clean it in a ceramic sink. F***!!!!

None. You were lucky, lots of disturbing Google images of your very situation.

eh, I have plastic buckets as well, but my father-in-law loves to be careless with them and they all have scratches so I prefer glass.

However, after a few"almosts" I switched to plastic a couple years ago.

Also none, but don't own one any more either. Buckets for short term, better bottles for extended aging.

    0. I use glass carboys almost exclusively.
I also like to run with scissors and sit too close to the TV.

Seriously, if you treat glass carboys as if they will break*, they generally don't. But mistreatment can easily result in breaking. But not always. I know a BA who dropped a full carboy onto an enamel coated cast iron bath tub. The carboy survived, but removed a large piece of enamel from the tub. I don't recommend trying this. As @JohnSnowNW mentioned, you can google up lots of disturbing images. But very few people take pictures of their carboys (or body parts) when the carboy didn't break. Here's a poll and discussion on the topic...

*Always lift/move glass carboys with a brewhauler. Use hands-off cleaning methods as much as possible. Wear gloves. Don't drop carboys. Don't knock carboys against hard surfaces accidentally and then claim they just exploded for no reason. Don't taunt Happy Fun Ball.

One glass carboy and one plastic. Fortunately the glass one was empty and remained intact despite the breaks. I accidentally bumped it's shoulder with the bottom of another empty glass carboy. I've been buying plastic carboys since. I recently had a 6 gallon Better Bottle crack and leak at the bottom while filled with PBW in my kitchen sink.

None, here. I keep one 3 gallon glass carboy around because it was the first one I bought and it hasn't broken yet. I treat it like a Faberge grenade.
A good friend busted one and split open the meaty part of his hand. The muscle was protruding and it took 12 stitches to close it up. He said that he freaked out when he saw the muscle popping out so when he tried shoving it back in and it wouldn't go that he just started pulling more of it out, that is, until his wife slapped him and brought him to the hospital.

None so far for me *knock on wood*. Glass carboys are the reason I limit myself to one beer on brew days until I have the wort in the ferm chamber.

One. I still use one, but plastic and the wooden barrel ferment the vast majority of what I brew.

One and Never again. Made a huge mess in the kitchen but I did not get injured. I now ferment my beers in Spiedel high density plastic fermenters which has handles. Check them out at MoreBeer I highly recommend them. My friend John was not so lucky but his four fingers Ale tasted pretty good!

I have broken a 1 gallon glass jug while washing it. No blood. For larger batches, I am in plastic buckets or better bottles about 95% of the time. I do have one glass carboy that I have wrapped base to neck in clear packing tape, with the hope that should I ever drop it the tape will help contain the damage. I only use my glass these days for long-term aging projects -- sours and meads.

Closest I had weas dropping a 1-gallon jug when I was going to transfer a sour starter I was making. I always wear long pants and closed-toe shoes when brewing - besides glass, there's lots of heavy objects and boiling liquid to worry about.
No injuries on that jug, other than pride. That was a wonderful smelling mess, though. :slight_frown:
