I'll be in town this weekend for the MLS Cup Final and am looking for suggestions of what to hit while there. We're thinking of making a stop by Jackie O's on our drive up from Virginia, but don't have any other plans except Sunday afternoon's game. thanks for your help!
Go Crew! Clintonville is pretty close to the stadium and has plenty of restaurants/stores. Beermenus.com.
Definitely recommend coming through Athens and hitting Jackie O's on the way. Its their anniversary party weekend so they'll have a shit ton of awesome beer on tap. Search through some of the other Columbus threads for bar/restaraunt tips. Go Crew!
Specifically near Mapfre Stadium is the Clintonville area, which includes Savor Growl (shady, but has lots of stuff, check dates), Palmer's Beverage Center (lots of stuff, looks meh on the outside), and Weiland's Market (one of the best selections in Columbus, period) for bottle shops, and there's The Crest Gastropub for food/beer. All of these are located on Indianola Ave, less than 10 minutes drive from the stadium to all 4 places. Also on Indianola is Studio 35, which has lots of craft beer and a theater. Cool place. Around 15 minutes drive puts you at Easton with Pies and Pints and World of Beer. That all said: GLORY TO COLUMBUS!
The Short North has tons of places, from Pies & Pints to Bodega to Pint House. Weilands has the best bottle selection around town. I'd recommend Seventh Son as far as Columbus Breweies go. They just released their imperial stout Oubliette, which is crazy good, as well as their strong ale and Humulus Nimbus super pale. MAPFRE only has one craft beer stand on the lower level, where you'll find stuff from Elevator, Land Grant, Columbus Brewing.
Not beer related but do yourself a favor and visit the North Market and destroy some Hot Chicken Takeover. It's an absolutely fantastic meal.
There's also a new brewery just outside of town on Columbus Rd, aka Rte. 550, called Devil's Kettle, as long as you're going to stop in Athens.
North Market is a must. Incredible food selection and they also have a small beer/wine dept, I scored some FFF when I was there. An employee told me they also get cans of Hoof Hearted.
If you don't stop at Jackie O's Friday and/or Saturday on your way into town you are clinically insane. That being said, there is also a special bottle release going on Saturday at Actual Brewing Co. http://drinkupcolumbus.com/2015/12/01/three-rare-bottles-coming-saturday-from-actual/
What is it with this stuff ? I've heard several people mention this chicken and now it's being brought up on Ba . . . ISO
seventh son had a bottle release of BA Oubliette yesterday and have some great drafts going like the coffee infused version.
http://hotchickentakeover.com/ Should I have specified due to the 10th Anniversary event OP is seemingly already aware of?
I have to say the Crest's draft list is pretty killer right now; some Hoof Hearted, Maine BC, Alpine, Death by Coconut and loads more. Sunday's drafts are 1/2 off starting at 2pm, so might be able to get a few in before 4pm kick off. Heading to the game myself, enjoy!
I'll recommend breakfast/brunch at Wolf's Ridge Brewing if you don't have plans for Sunday morning yet.
First, we should probably create an official Visiting Columbus thread. I find that super helpful when visiting places. Second, you picked a great weekend with the releases mentioned above, Jackie O's tenth, and hoof hearted releasing a brand new nelson DIPA. There will be a line. Since Mapfre and HH are both right off 71, it's actually not too far out of the way.
Not sure I'll get a chance to try all these places since I'll be at MLS Cup for work, but these suggestions are a huge help. Any places near downtown that I could hit quickly? And off the record, RCTID.
