Agree with those who stated Bells Kalamazoo (mild licorice taste). Also, Avery's Czar to me had a strong licorice taste that I really thought was too much for me. A friend brought on over two years ago about the same time I bought mine. We shared his and I still have mine aging in the crawl space under my kitchen.

Another vote for Abyss, solid well balanced licorice in it.

Which leads me to a question...
Are there any beers with the distinctive "Scandinavian" liquorice flavour?

I am not sure what a distinctive "Scandinavian" licorice flavor is exactly. Licorice as a treat in Europe is far more common than it is in America particularly black licorice.

Depending on who you talk to the best stuff comes from Denmark, or Holland, or Germany... etc...

I found a lot of stouts with black licorice when I was in Copenhagen and also lots of good candy makers... like Lakrids who also did a beer with Bryghus.

This is the stuff made with the real licorice root, other than the star anise spice, or flavors like fennel.

    I am getting hungry...

Agreed, that stuff on tap is the bomb! Rich and licorice, smooth and fantastic. Just sayin!

I just poured a bottle of Black Sam's Licorice Stout. Its a good beer. Great balance of molasses sweetness and bitter dark chocolate, but the licorice flavour is very mild. I definitely recommend.

    I think it's called Salmiak?

It's kinda weird and salty, but not really...

Liqourice in Aus is not as common as Europe, but you can still get it everywhere

Black salted licorice is popular in places like Germany also. My mother loves that stuff... truly an acquired taste..

I think the satin solitude from central waters has some very nice sweet licorice flavors. I'm not sure if licorice is added or if it's just a taste that I pick up. Licorice/anise flavors are a great compliment to a dark beer and I'm surprised there are not more of them.

Abyss is one that I picked up some licorice flavor. Not sure if this had been said as I didn't read the rest of this thread, but Stone released an Anise version of their Imperial Russian Stout about 2 years ago and it was very licorice forward. Not a bad beer at all. I also recall catching some licorice in their original Imperial Stout.

If you're ever in Charleston SC, drop by Edmund's Oast and try a glass of Under Lurker. They age their RIS in a bourbon barrel that had 3,000 bottles of Underberg sit in it for 6 months.

Interesting. My memory of this one was that the big flavour in La Resolution was one of cloves, which I loved. I guess i have to buy another bottle of this one. Cheers!
